Letter: Saco taxpayers: Voter turnout was disappointing (June 25, 2009)

Editor:

To Saco taxpayers: Thank you to those who did vote, and a special thank you to those who voted ‘No.’  However, I’m disappointed in the turnout as only 784 of 12,500 Saco voters actually went to the polls.

I thought a projected increase of 42 cents per thousand in property taxes for the school budget alone would have generated more of a response from Saco voters. Last year’s combined municipal and school budget only increased the property taxes 10 cents per thousand.

The Regional School Unit 23 budget second referendum vote will possibly be the first or second week of July. Prior to that vote some budget workshops will be held – they are open to the public – and then another public hearing where voters can request changes to parts of the budget.

I wish nothing more than to see a significant turn out of voters/taxpayers from all three communities of Dayton, Old Orchard Beach and Saco to ensure a minority of voters/taxpayers are not making the decision for the majority of voters/taxpayers.
