PTO announces annual craft fair 

 

The Saco Middle School PTO is looking for crafters for its fifth annual community craft fair to be held at Saco Middle School Saturday, Nov.14. Spaces for the fair are $25 if a crafter has a family member attending SMS, or $30 without an SMS connection.  PTO will limit the number of vendors with duplicate merchandise. Tiger golf scramble is July 31


The Biddeford Hockey Boosters will hold its second annual Tiger Hockey Golf Scramble Friday, July 31, at Dutch Elm Golf Course in Arundel. Proceeds from the event help fund boys and girls, middle and high school hockey programs and equipment needs. Players and possible sponsors may contact Steve Guay at 282-0541 or send an email to gemapp@gwi.net to obtain registration and sponsorship forms. 


Tours available of Wood Island


  Annual summer tours to Wood Island Lighthouse will be offered through Saturday, Aug. 29. Tours will leave Vine’s Landing in Biddeford Pool aboard Lightrunner at 4:30 and 5:30 p.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays, 1 and 2 p.m. on Saturdays. Reservations are necessary and may be made by calling 286-3229. Tours are run on a donation basis with a suggested minimum of $10 per person.  Call for further information or visit www.woodislandlighthouse.org.


Singer featured at Ocean Park


The Wednesday Evening at Jordan series in Ocean Park will feature mezzo-soprano Beth Harmon and pianist Susan Rudy on July 8. Harmon is Chancel Choir director at the Cumberland Congregational Church and is a frequent soloist at area churches. Rudy divides her time between Cape Elizabeth and McLean, Va. In the Washington, D.C., area she has been an accompanist for the Washington Savoyards, performed as a piano soloist in the Alexandria Recital Series and worked with the Victorian Lyric Opera Company.  In Maine, she is a member of the Portland Rossini Club and a rehearsal pianist for PORTopera.

The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the historic Jordan Hall, 46 Temple Ave. Admission is free, but contributions are accepted. 


Author Anita Shreve to visit Saco


Literacy Volunteers of Greater Saco-Biddeford continue its Maine author series with a visit by author and Maine summer resident, Anita Shreve, who will take the stage at the Thornton Academy Auditorium, 438 Main St. in Saco Thursday, July 16 from 7 to 9 p.m. (doors open at 6:30 p.m.) to discuss her new best selling novel, “Testimony.”

Recognized by People Magazine as a “master storyteller,” Shreve is the author of 14 novels. In “Testimony,” Shreve explores the all too plausible and explosive cause and effect of a sex scandal at a small New England co-ed boarding school. 

An Evening with Anita Shreve includes a raffle, a book signing, and sales of Shreve’s novels provided by Nonesuch Books in Saco. Refreshments will be available. The reading is open to the public. Advance tickets are $10 and may be purchased at Nonesuch Books in Saco and South Portland, Dyer Library in Saco, Libby Memorial Library in Old Orchard Beach, or at www.sacoliteracy.com.

Art opening July 17 in Biddeford


Three local artists will display their work 5 to 8:30 p.m., Friday, July 17, during an opening at the Heart of Biddeford, 205 Main St. in Biddeford. Diann Libby will discuss her work and process used to create her art, Jessica Libby will show her psychedelic work under black light and Anastasia Weigle will present several new assemblage pieces and create a live assemblage with Melissa as her model. Music will be provided by The Worlds Finest duo. Previews of their work will begin July 10. The exhibit continues through Aug. 21 and will be included in the Friday, July 31, art walk.
