People in the News (July 2, 2009)
Julie Villemaire, of Saco & Biddeford Savings Institution, has been named Rotarian of the Year by the Biddeford-Saco Rotary. In addition to being the Vice President Elect, she has been instrumental in coordinating the annual TV auction and holiday party for local school children, initiated the Polio Plus Bingo fundraiser, and is involved with each project the club undertakes. President Frank Gooding said, “There was no doubt Julie was the right choice for Rotarian of the Year. She not only steps up to the plate and gets the job done for this club, but she is the person you know will be there without having to ask. We are fortunate to have her in our club helping our community.”
Other award winners were Roland Eon, of Paquin & Carroll Insurance Co., The Private Sector award; Carl Walsh, of the Biddeford Recreation Department, the Public Sector award.; Burton Howe, of United Baptist Church in Saco, the Humanitarian award; James Godbout, of Jim Godbout Plumbing & Heating Inc., the Vocational Service award; and David Lowe, of The Insurance Center, the third annual Goodwin Outstanding Service award;
Service Above Self awards, Rotary’s highest honor for individual Rotarians, were presented to Karen Chasse, of Southern Maine Medical Center; Frank Dumais, of H&D Title and Closing Services, LLC; James McAllister, of McAllister Machine Inc; and Helene Plourde, of Kennebunk Savings Bank.
Paul Harris Fellowships, named for Paul Harris who founded Rotary more than 100 years ago, were presented to the following individuals who exemplify Rotary’s humanitarian and educational objectives: Jackson Brown of Harbor View Lending, Andy Greif of the Community Bicycle Center and James Godbout.
Chuck Hennessey, of Anderson-Watkins Insurance, and Leon Tranchemontagne were presented clocks and pins for perfect attendance.
Meghan A. Lambert, daughter of Michael and Diane Lambert of Saco, has been named to the dean’s list at the Maine College of Art for the 2009 spring semester. She also recently won a merit scholarship for her graphic design exhibit. Lambert is a 2004 graduate of Thornton Academy and is scheduled to graduate in spring 2010 with a bachelor’s of fine art degree in graphic design.
Christine Cote of Biddeford has been awarded the
$1,000 Joanne Wrba Memorial Nursing Scholarship by SMMC Visiting Nurses. The scholarship was created to honor Joanne Wrba, who died in 2002 at the age of 51. Cote will enter the nursing program at Saint Joseph’s College in Maine this September.
A non-traditional adult learner nursing scholarship of $1,000 was awarded to Judy Rizas, also of Biddeford. She graduated from Old Orchard Beach High School in the 1980s, is an operating room scheduling secretary at SMMC and is pursuing a nursing degree from Southern Maine Community College. Rizas said she is following in the footsteps of her mother, a nurse for 35 years.
Old Orchard Beach/Saco Adult and Community Education students were honored June 18 during their graduation ceremony. Attending graduates were: Ariel Bailey, Troy Beauregard, Adrien Bisson, Rachel Dumas, Kayla Farley, Tammy Glatz, Maxmillion Landry, Tamika Levesque, Ashley MacDonald, Brianna Ouellette, Reneatte Rascati, Elizabeth Sue Smith and Amy Yudaken.
