Biddeford, Saco men die in accidents (July 30, 2009)
Saco police continue to investigate two fatal accidents last weekend.
On Sunday, James Bellefeuille, 50, of Biddeford, was struck and killed by a car while walking north on Main Street near York Hill. Michael Woods, 23, of South Portland, was arrested at the scene and charged with operating under the influence causing death, a Class B felony. He was held on $100,000 bail at York County Jail.
Police Chief Bradley Paul said Woods was driving a 2001 Kia Sportage SUV when he hit Bellefeuille about 100 feet north of the bridge connecting Biddeford and Saco. Bellefeuille was walking in the same direction as traffic on the opposite side of the road from the sidewalk, he said.
After hitting Bellefeuille, who died at the scene, Woods hit a fire hydrant, Paul said. He said thousands of gallons of water caused “considerable damage” to the road and impacted traffic for several hours.
Police were again called to the scene of a fatal accident Monday morning. Paul said Keith Kline, 37, of Saco, was killed when he lost control of his car on Route 112 and hit a house.
Paul said Kline was driving west on Route 112, also called Buxton Road, in the area of Whitten Drive when he lost control of his 2006 Mitsubishi Lancer on a curve. Kline’s car left the roadway and hit 247 Buxton Road, causing extensive structural damage, he said.
Paul said Kline died at the scene and had to be extricated from the wrecked vehicle. He was the only occupant of the car and no one was home at the time of the accident. Paul said speed is considered a factor in the crash.
Homeowner Walter Kiesow said it was lucky he and his family spent the night elsewhere because the car hit the house right below his son’s bedroom. While checking out the damage Monday morning, he said he has insurance on the home but does not know what his plans are. The home is currently for sale.
Paul said Saco patrol officer Jeff Cook is reconstructing both accidents. State police are assisting with the investigation of the Main Street accident.
