People in the News (July 30, 2009)

Saco Police Department Patrol Officer Monica Fahy has been appointed school resource officer for Thornton Academy. Fahy joined the Saco department four years ago after seven years with the Sault Ste. Marie Police Department in Michigan. She is a 1997 graduate of Lake Superior State University, where she received a Bachelor of Science degree in criminal justice/law enforcement.  She will assume her new duties at the beginning of the school year this fall. 


The following artists were awarded for their work Saturday during the Seaside Art Festival in downtown Old Orchard Beach: First Place – Doris Bernier for “Red Boat,” an oil painting; second place – Tammy Charles for “Stargazer,” an acrylic; third place – “Tumbling Lilies,” a textile by Kathy Angel Lee; Bill Edmunds Award for best photography – Joe Rokowski for “Cruising Home’ and three honorable mentions – “Swift River Rapids,” a watercolor by Evelyn Moreshead; “Blacksmith,” an oil by Chuck Bernier; and “Whale Watch’ a pastel by Iona Desmond.

The Purchase Prize provided by the town of Old Orchard Beach went to Iona Desmond for her portrayal of downtown Old Orchard Beach. 


Local students named to the dean’s list for the spring 2009 semester at the University of Maine at Farmington are:  Marissa Boucher, Ashley Rochefort, Yeneida Rubio and Heather Vadnais of Biddeford; Greta Nelson of Dayton; Kristi Geaumont and Megan Sullivan of Old Orchard Beach; and Joshua Bossie, Lori Green, Amanda Hatch, Mackenzie Jones, Stephanie Lennon, Lauren Martin, Emma Morrison, Brian Morrison and Jennifer Trautvetter of Saco.


Shawn J. Tardy has been promoted to chief warrant officer five in the U.S. Army. Tardy, a Millinocket native, is assistant project manager and government flight representative assigned to the Aerial Common Sensors Program Branch, Fort Belvoir, Fairfax, Va. His wife, Stacy, is the daughter of Pris Boucher of Biddeford.


Amy Mantis of Biddeford has been named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at Berklee College of Music in Boston.


Fiber Materials Inc. has awarded its annual Margaret Chase Smith scholarships to five area students.  The scholarship fund was established for students entering the University of Maine educational system and honors former U.S. Sen. Margaret Chase Smith.  The students are: Erika Meiler and Brett Meiler, children of Keith and Denise Meiler of Saco; Nicholas Mowatt, son of David and Sherry Mowatt of Buxton; Cory Boissonneault, daughter of Jeanne Kramer and Pete Boissonneault of Biddeford; and Aaron Gunn, son of Michelle and Don Gunn of Biddeford. 


Benjamin Adams of Saco and Sean Fitzgerald of Biddeford have been named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at Lyndon State College in Lyndon Center, Vt. Adams, son of David and Susan Adams of Saco, is majoring in graphic design and digital media. Fitzgerald is the son of Gary Lee Fitzgerald and Giselle Cantin of Saco. He is majoring in television studies.
