Pilot error cited in 2008 crash (July 30, 2009)

Federal investigators say pilot error likely caused the midair collision of two small planes last December that killed a Biddeford native.

Andrew Rossignol, 21, a Biddeford High School graduate, was killed Dec. 6, 2008, when his plane collided with another, killing his passenger and two people on the other plane.

Rossignol was giving a flying lesson when the accident occurred over the Florida Everglades near Ft. Lauderdale, according to a report issued by the National Transportation Safety Board.

Both planes were operating in a concentrated flight training area prior to the accident. Radar information provided by Federal Aviation Administration air traffic control personnel indicated the collision occurred at about 2,000 feet above ground level. The planes landed in about three feet of water and all four people died of blunt force trauma, according to the report.
