Four candidates in mayoral race
Biddeford voters will be asked Nov. 3 to elect a mayor, city council and school committee, and consider a $34 million high school renovation bond.
Mayor candidates are incumbent Joanne Twomey, David Flood, Karl Reed and Richard Giroux.
At-large candidates for city council are current councilors Patricia Boston, J. Fred Staples Jr. and George “Pete” Lamontagne. Also running are Bil Moriarty, Brian Pelletier, Roch Angers and Richard Rhames.
City Councilors Bob Mills of Ward 5, Richard Laverriere of Ward 6 and Raymond Gagnon of Ward 7 are running unopposed for reelection.
Other council candidates include James Emerson and Suzanne Sexton in Ward 1; David Bourque and Dennis Anglea in Ward 2; Matthew Hight and incumbent Clement Fleurent in Ward 3; and Alfred Lamontagne, who is running unopposed in Ward 4.
School committee candidates are current members Nathan Mills, Jane Kircher, Laura Seaver and Margaret Bean. Also running are Tammy Fleurent, Alexandra Clarke and Roberta Bernier. All seven seats on the committee are elected at-large, though only two candidates from one ward can be elected. Mills, Fleurent and Kircher are all from Ward 3.
Voters will also elect warden and ward clerks. Warden candidates are Heather Locke, Ward 1; Ann Plamondon, Ward 2; Penny Beaupre, Ward 3; Norma Martel, Ward 4; and Robert Cote, Ward 5. There are no candidates for wards 6 and 7.
Ward clerk candidates are Tina Turgeon, Ward 1; Mignonne Plamondon, Ward 2; Sheila Neault and Michael “Tony” Fleurent, Ward 3; and Lorraine Auger, Ward 5. There are no candidates in wards 4, 6 and 7.
If approved, the $34 million bond will pay for renovations of Biddeford High School, including upgrading security features and classrooms and improving handicap accessibility.
