Saco Mayor Roland Michaud said he is honored to serve the city for a second term.
Michaud was challenged by mayoral hopeful and outgoing city councilor Ronald Morton. Michaud received 4,887 votes while Morton received 1,501 votes.
“It’s always a sense of relief and elation that the voters put their trust in you,” Michaud said Wednesday morning.
Michaud said he is looking forward to working with the two new councilors who will begin work Dec. 7, as well as the incumbents returning for another term. He said he will miss working with Morton, whom he described as a “great man.”
Having two new council members – Marie Doucette of Ward 3 and Jeffrey Christenbury of Ward 4 – is exciting, Michaud said. Doucette has much experience in the community and Christenbury brings a younger perspective to the council, he said.
Michaud said the council will work on tough issues coming up, including rezoning and the budget. He said he expects the upcoming budget year to be “rather lean” and said the council will have to work together to maintain stability for the city.
“It will be a learning experience for all of us,” he said.
Ward 1 voters elected Margaret “Peg” Mills to serve another city council term. She was challenged by Cynthia Chadwick-Granger and David Precourt. Newcomer Jeffrey Christenbury received nearly 300 more votes than incumbent Sandra Bastille in Ward 4.
Leslie Smith Jr. of Ward 2, Marie Doucette of Ward 3, Arthur Tardif of Ward 5, Eric Cote of Ward 6 and Marston Lovell of Ward 7 all ran unopposed for two-year council terms.
Voters overwhelmingly approved a $2.3 million bond for paving and improvements to city streets. Improvements will be made to 20 miles of roads throughout the city.
