‘Jailbird’ keeps police busy

A man dressed as a “jailbird” kept Biddeford police busy on Halloween night.
David Michael LeClair, 29, of Buxton, was charged with elevated aggravated assault after police say he slashed eight vehicle tires and stabbed a Biddeford resident – all while dressed in a “jailbird” costume, according to Deputy Police Chief JoAnne Fisk.
Police received a report of men slashing tires in the area of Main and St. Marys streets around 1:30 a.m. Sunday. The caller said one of the men was wearing a “jailbird” Halloween costume with black and white stripes, according to police.
As an officer approached the area of 365 Main St., he saw a costumed man walking with two other people. When they saw the officer, the three men took off running down an alley, according to police.
The officer parked his cruiser and began chasing them, when he was flagged down by a man who was yelling the person in the jailbird costume had stabbed him, according to police.
The 26-year-old man who was stabbed was transported to Maine Medical Center in Portland for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. He was released the next day and said he did not know the man who stabbed him, according to police.
A K-9 unit from the Old Orchard Beach Police Department tracked LeClair to where Saco Police were detaining him.
Police said LeClair slashed the tires of eight vehicles and attempted to do the same on a moving car. LeClair remained in jail Monday afternoon.
Biddeford police also investigated a strong-armed robbery at 7 a.m. Saturday on Pierson’s Lane. Police said two men were standing outside a home smoking cigarettes when they were approached by Gilbert M. Lilly Jr., 25, of Lisbon Falls.
Police said Lilly grabbed one of the men, demanded money and threatened to brandish a knife. Lilly allegedly told the man he would physically harm him with a knife if he did not turn over money, according to police.
According to witness statements to police, Lilly was “very intoxicated” and did not know the man he grabbed. He did not get any money during the incident.
Lilly was charged with Class B robbery and transported to York County Jail, where he remained early this week.
