Roger A. Barra

Roger A. Barra, 100, of Biddeford died Sunday, Dec. 27, 2009, at Southridge Living Center in Biddeford.
He was born in Thetford Mines, Quebec, on Dec. 20, 1909, to Edward and Olivine Roberge Barra. He was educated in Biddeford and Canadian schools.
Mr. Barra worked 15 years at Pepperell Manufacturing Co. in Biddeford, 19 years at the Saco-Lowell Shop and more than 23 years with the Biddeford-Saco Bus Co. and Maine Transit and Brunswick Transportation Co. until he retired in 1977.
His first wife, Yvonne Simoneau Barra, died in 1963. His second wife, Yvette Rouleau, died in 1982.
Mr. Barra was an active member of St. Joseph’s Church of the Good Shepherd Parish for many years.
Survivors include his daughter, Aline Demers of Biddeford; his companion of many years, Olive Croteau of Biddeford; a brother, Robert Barra of Kennebunk; two grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, four great-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Thursday at St. Anne’s Chapel of St. Joseph’s Church in Biddeford, with burial in St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Biddeford.
Arrangements are by Hope Memorial Chapel, Biddeford.


Michael A. Mondor

Michael A. Mondor, 56, of Glenwood Avenue, Saco, died Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2009, at home after a 16-month battle with stomach cancer.
He was born on July 26, 1953, one of 17 children of Robert J. and Alice F. (Lacharite) Mondor.  
Mr. Mondor attended Saco schools and was a graduate of Thornton Academy in 1972, where he played baseball.  He worked at many different jobs, including at Laurel Hill Cemetery, Danton’s Restaurant, Soho’s Motel and Referees in Old Orchard as a short-order cook until illness forced him to stop working.   He was an avid fan of the New York Giants, Patriots, Red Sox, Bruins and Celtics.   He also umpired Little League baseball games and women’s softball games and enjoyed competitive darts.
He was preceded in death by his son Joshua in 2007, his parents, his brother Donald, his sister Nichole Green and husband Jim, as well as a niece Monique Mondor and nephew B. Robert Green.
He is survived by nine brothers, Robert R. and his friend Joan of Biddeford; Dennis and his wife, Cathy, of Old Orchard Beach, Patrick, James, Marc and William of Saco, Richard of Portland, Norman of Houston, Texas, and David and his wife, Tracie, of West Linn, Ore.; five sisters, Susan and her husband, Michael Spath, of Saco, Jocelyn and her husband, Richard Giroux, of Buxton, Linda and her husband, Kent Anderson, of Jupiter, Fla., Judith and her husband, Charles Williams, of Cartersville, Ga., and Elaine and her husband, Ronald Dorais, of Cape Coral, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews.
A funeral service was held Tuesday at Cote Funeral Home. Burial will be at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in his memory to the Saco Food Pantry or Beacon Hospice, 54 Atlantic Place, South Portland, ME 04106.

David W. Rossignol

David W. Rossignol, 50, of Saco, died Thursday, Dec. 31, 2009, at Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford.
He was born Feb. 12, 1959, in Biddeford, to David and Lillian Plourde Rossignol. He was a graduate of Biddeford High School.
Mr. Rossignol was employed by Kmart in Scarborough for seven years. He also was proprietor of Seacoast Bakers.
He enjoyed playing guitar and had a great love of music. He also liked going to car shows and looking at sports cars. He loved to walk the grounds and go to Mass at the Franciscan Monastery. He was a parishioner of Notre Dame de Lourdes Church, Good Shepherd Parish in Saco.
He was preceded in death by his father and by one sister, Florence Benson.
He is survived by his mother, Lillian Rossignol of North Waterboro; his wife of 30 years, Paula M. Perreault Rossignol of Saco; a son, Rodney D. Rossignol and his wife, Heather, of Saco; a daughter, Victoria S. Rossignol of Gorham; four sisters,  Georgia Mae LaBelle of Florida, Janita Gagne of Sanford, Lorraine Lacasse of Florida and  Shirley Fortier of North Waterboro; a grandson, David; and several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated Monday at St. Joseph’s Church, Good Shepherd Parish in Biddeford, with burial in St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Biddeford.

Leo ‘Pete’ Labarre

Leo “Pete” Labarre, 81, of Saco, died Thursday, Dec. 31, 2009, at Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford.
He was born Aug. 16, 1928, in Biddeford, to Aime and Marie Louise Dumont Labarre. He was educated in Biddeford schools.
Mr. Labarre was employed by the Boston & Maine Railroad for several years and Pepperell Manufacturing in Biddeford for 14 years. He later worked for Biddeford Textile for many years and retired in 1994.
 He married his wife, Rose, on May 10, 1952, at St. Andre’s Church in Biddeford.
During retirement he enjoyed taking rides in the car and going out to eat with his wife. He also liked the outdoors and working in his garden.
Mr. Labarre was a parishioner of Notre Dame de Lourdes Church, Good Shepherd Parish, in Saco.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Raoul and Ernest, and by two sisters, Laurette Dubois and Gertrude Henaire.
 He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Rose Blanchette Labarre of Saco, and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service was held Wednesday at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Biddeford.

Donald W. Dubuc

Donald W. Dubuc, 59, of Biddeford, died Jan. 2, 2010, at Maine Medical Center after a long illness.
 He was born Oct., 14, 1950, in Springfield, Mass., to Roland and Rita (Pelletier) Dubuc. He attended Biddeford schools.
He married Janet R. Lariviere on Jan. 24, 1970 in Kennebunk.
Mr. Dubuc last worked as an oil delivery driver and manager with Tri-Town Fuels for more than 15 years before his retirement in 1993. He previously worked at the Saco tannery and Oakhurst Dairy.
Mr. Dubuc enjoyed racing remote-control cars and competed in competitions in York.
 He was an avid candlepin bowler who also enjoyed watching drag racing on TV and loved listening to rock music. He especially enjoyed playing cards with his friends, on the Internet and at home.
He was preceded in death by his mother and his sister, Theresa Tardif.
Survivors include his wife of nearly 40 years, Janet R. Dubuc, of Biddeford; his father, Roland E. Dubuc of Biddeford; his daughter, Deborah C. Henaire of Saco; his son, Stephen K. Dubuc of Arundel; his sister, Joan Bedard and her husband, Raymond, of Biddeford; his brother-in-law Arthur Tardif of Saco; three grandchildren, Michelle Henair, Ashley Tillson and Sebastiaen Dubuc; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral was held Wednesday at Hope Memorial Chapel, with a private burial.

Hilary J. Hurtubise

Hilary J. Hurtubise, 85, of Saco, died Monday, Jan. 4, 2010, at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough, with his wife and his sister at his side.
He was born on Nov. 16, 1924, in Saco, to John F. and Julia (Stinson) Hurtubise.
He graduated from Thornton Academy and went on to Portland Junior College and earned an associate degree.
He later graduated from the University of New Hampshire with a bachelor’s degree. He joined the U.S. Army during World War II and served in the European and Pacific theaters.
Mr. Hurtubise was employed by Howard Needles Tammen and Bergendorph Engineering and worked on the Maine Turnpike. He later worked as a teacher at Mapleton High School and Gardiner High School for six years.
Most recently, he was employed by the Maine Department of Health and Human Services as a social worker with the Child Welfare Division in Lewiston. He retired in 1981 after 24 years of service.  
He loved animals, especially his cats, Callie and Charlie.
Mr. Hurtubise was preceded in death by his brother, Richard Hurtubise, and three sisters, Marjorie Whitworth, Dorothy Nadeau and Irene Yarborough.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Elizabeth (Orpin) Hurtubise of Saco; his sister, Sister Ruth Hurtubise of Portland; and many nieces and nephews.
 Visiting hours will be 10 to 11 a.m. today at Cote Funeral Home, Saco. A funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. today at the funeral home.

Philip J. Boucher

Philip J. Boucher, 95, of Arundel died Sunday, Jan. 3, 2010, at Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford.
 He was born April 20, 1914, in Biddeford to Jerome and Alma Lessard Boucher and was educated in Biddeford schools.
Mr. Boucher worked 10 years at Pepperell Manufacturing Co. of Biddeford and Bates Manufacturing Co. in Saco. He served with the Civil Air Patrol before serving with the U.S. Navy during World War II. After the war he worked for Guy Gannett in Portland for a few years as an airplane mechanic. He later worked for Webber Hospital in Biddeford before returning to school to earn his license as a boiler engineer technician. He then worked 14 years at the Maine Youth Center in South Portland. He worked at his farm in Arundel raising sheep and horses. He went on to train horses and raced them in the harness racing circuit for a number of years. He became the head trainer at the Egyptian Stables in New Jersey.
He was a member of the Maine Association of Retirees, the Biddeford Disabled American Veterans, the York County Veterans Alliance and he headed the Maine Sheep Herders Association. He built and donated the sheep barn at the Acton Fair Grounds for the 4-H club. He enjoyed dancing and singing.
On Oct. 23, 2004, he married Beatrice D. St. Pierre in St. Joseph’s Church.
He was preceded in death by his first wife of 70 years, Leonne Binette Boucher; his son, Paul Boucher; a grandson Milton Barden and seven brothers and sisters.
Survivors include his wife, Beatrice, of Arundel; his daughter, Phyllis Anspaugh and her husband, Lee, of Sanford; his stepson, Richard Chretien and his wife, Lorraine, of Biddeford; two brothers, Edgar Boucher and his wife, Rosa, of Melbourne, Fla., and Raymond Boucher and his wife, Doris, of Biddeford; four grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and  several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. today at St. Joseph Church of the Good Shepherd Parish in Biddeford, with burial in St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Biddeford.

 Edward O’Neill Cole

Edward O’Neill Cole died Sunday, Jan. 3, 2009, at Seal Rock Health Care in Saco from complications of both Alzheimer’s disease and skin cancer.
Mr. Cole was born Aug. 10, 1925, in Baltimore, Md., to Warren E. and Peg O’Neill Cole. He grew up in Baltimore and graduated from both Loyola High School and Loyola College, where he played basketball and baseball and was a member of the Honor Society of Jesuit Institutions, Alpha Sigma Nu. He was in the Air Force studying to be a navigator when World War II ended.
 Upon his return home he resumed his studies in both math and physics at Johns Hopkins University and earned a degree in industrial engineering. In 1951 he married T. Jane Fallon, whom he had known since the fourth grade. He started a career in personnel with the Bendix Corp. in Maryland but soon sought other opportunities.
 He and Jane moved to Long Island, N.Y., in 1960 with their daughters Pat and Katie where he secured a job with the young company, Fairchild Camera in Syosset. During the course of his tenure there, he participated as part of a team that chose the location for Fairchild Semiconductor in South Portland. After Fairchild, he took on greater responsibilities in the field of human resources with Squibb Pharmaceuticals in Princeton N.J., and later Marsh and McLennan Inc. in New York.
 Over the years, he and his wife enjoyed living in a variety of locations along the Atlantic seaboard, rarely far from the ocean. After retiring, they moved to Maine to be closer to their daughters and grandchildren.
Mr. Cole was a generous benefactor and supported a wide variety of charitable organizations. For many years he actively worked with and supported the American Skin Association.  In 1997 he was awarded a scroll of appreciation for humanitarianism and philanthropy from the organization’s board of directors. As he grew older, he began a long journey with Alzheimer’s disease. Even as this disease progressed, he retained his grace and gentle humor. A gentleman to the end, he was polite and considerate always, despite his confusion. After four decades of successfully battling skin cancer, it began its final assault on him last July in the form of aggressive squamous cell cancer.
Mr. Cole is survived by his wife of 58 years, Jane; daughters Pat Cole Moshimer and Kate Cole Dulac; son-in-law Russ Dulac; grandchildren Elsie and Rose Moshimer and Carrie Jane and Alex Cole Dulac; brother Warren E. Cole Jr. of Columbia, Md.; and his sister Mary Jane Pearl and husband ,William of Williamsburg, Va.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Mr. Cole’s name may be made to the Animal Welfare Society, P.O. Box 43, Kennebunk ME 04094.
A funeral Mass was Wednesday at Most Holy Trinity Church, Good Shepherd Parish in Saco. Burial will be at a later date.
