Three Cheverus High School juniors, including Emily LaVerriere of Biddeford, have been working on a digital video news piece for the C-SPAN 2010 StudentCam contest.
Working under the guidance of Cheverus computer science teacher Lorraine Aromando, the trio interviewed opponents and proponents of alternative energy, specifically wind energy. The team also interviewed Gov. John Baldacci on Dec. 17 for the production.
C-SPAN’s StudentCam is an annual national video documentary competition that encourages students to think seriously about issues that affect communities and the nation. Students are asked to create a five- to eight-minute video documentary. The students’ completed video will be posted on the Cheverus High School Web site in January.

Steppin’ Out Dance Centre
held its annual Christmas Fundraiser Dec. 20 at Thornton Academy. The dancers raised more than $2,000 for The Barbara Bush Pediatric Clinic at Maine Medical Center as well as three full boxes of brand new hats and mittens. More than 400 dancers entertained family and friends before a sing-along and a visit from Mr. and Mrs. Claus for the little ones.

Students at the Biddeford Regional Center of Technology were recently selected students of the month. Kristina Michaud from medical sciences was selected for the business, early childhood and health programs and Alex Lachance from welding was selected for the trade and technical programs.  Other students who were nominated for the student of the month award include: Joe Doherty from electrical technology, Jeremy Drake from legal studies, Jeremiah Flick from cooperative education, Jeff Gonneville from auto mechanics, Bill Herold-Porter from drafting, Chelsea Morin from business and financial management, Kaitlyn Morse from retail /marketing, Brittany Smith from medical assisting, Patrick Roy from building trades and Jennifer Vadnais from early childhood education.

Army National Guard Pfc. Hamayon Ahadi has graduated from the Infantryman One Station Unit Training at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga.  The training consists of Basic Infantry Training and Advanced Individual Training. The advanced individual training course is designed to train infantry soldiers to perform reconnaissance operations; employ, fire and recover anti-personnel and anti-tank mines; locate and neutralize land mines and operate target and sight equipment; operate and maintain communications equipment and radio networks; construct field firing aids for infantry weapons; and perform infantry combat exercises and dismounted battle drills, which includes survival procedures in a nuclear, biological or chemical contaminated area. He is the son of Abdul and Hakima Ahadi of Park View Court, Biddeford. Ahadi is a 2002 graduate of Biddeford High School, and received an associate degree in 2004 from Southern Maine Community College in South Portland.

Leslie Romanow-Jordan of Biddeford Intermediate School recently was certified in the 2009 class of Maine Teachers Take FLITE (Financial Literacy Instructional Techniques for Educators), a training program for K-12 teachers. A program of the Institute for Financial Literacy, Maine Teachers Take FLITE enrolls teachers in the Certified Educator in Personal Finance program, a professional certification and training program developed to improve the knowledge and expertise of financial literacy educators. FLITE focuses on teachers’ professional development and increasing their confidence in their own ability to teach students about personal finance. The 2009 FLITE class was funded through donations from individuals and grants from the Maine State Treasurer’s Council on Financial Education and the Stephen & Tabitha King Foundation.

Denise Anita Rees
was inducted into the Alpha Chi Nu Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa at Southern Maine Community College on Oct. 25.  Rees, from Saco, is majoring in nursing. She is the daughter of Jean and Andrea Pelletier of Biddeford and is married to Bill Rees. Established in 1918 by two-year college presidents, Phi Theta Kappa is the oldest and most prestigious honor society serving two-year colleges around the world.

The Cheverus High School Debate Team earned the top spot in debate at the Winter Solstice Tournament held at Edward Little High School on Dec. 18. Sam Scribner, a junior from Knnebunkport, placed fifth in novice Lincoln-Douglas debate, and the team of Kevin Connelly, a junior from Biddeford, and Reid DesRuisseaux a junior from Buxton, placed fourth in varsity public forum debate.

Marilyn K. Tushar of Biddeford, a sophomore majoring in political science at Oregon State University in Corvallis, has been named to the fall term scholastic honor roll.
 
Meaghan Chemelski,
daughter of Bruce and Carol Chemelski of Biddeford, spent the fall 2009 semester studying abroad in Stellenbosch, South Africa, through a program run by Saint Michael’s College. Chemelski was a student at Stellenbosch University. Chemelski is a senior sociology major at Saint Michael’s, a liberal arts, residential Catholic, college located in the Burlington area of Vermont.

James McDermott,
a student at Old Orchard Beach High School, has won the Rensselaer Medal from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. The medal is the oldest prize of its kind in the United States and is awarded to a member of the junior class who is considered the school’s most promising science and mathematics student. Each medalist who is accepted and subsequently enrolled at Rensselaer in Troy, N.Y., receives a $60,000 scholarship.
