The Rev. David Schlaver, CSC (Congregation of Holy Cross) has been named temporary administrator/parochial vicar of St. Margaret Parish, Old Orchard Beach. The assignment is effective immediately and will continue at least through the end of June when St. Margaret will become part of Good Shepherd Parish in Biddeford and Saco. He has been on sabbatical from his regular ministry for about a year and spent it ministering in the Biddeford, Saco and Old Orchard Beach area. Rev. Schlaver, 57, has worked at the Holy Cross mission in Bangladesh and during the last 20 years ran retreats and seminars for the Holy Cross community and the Missionaries of Charity around the world. He has also been the director of campus ministry at Notre Dame and publisher at Ave Maria Press. He succeeds the Rev. Coleman O’Toole, who retired for health reasons last fall at the age of 81.
The Cheverus High School Debate Team earned the top spot in debate at the Winter Solstice Tournament held at Edward Little High School on Dec. 18.
Sam Scribner, a junior from Knnebunkport, placed fifth in novice Lincoln-Douglas debate, and the team of Kevin Connelly, a junior from Biddeford, and Reid DesRuisseaux a junior from Buxton, placed fourth in varsity public forum debate.
Diane Doyle of Saco has been nominated by Gov. John Baldacci for reappointment to the Land for Maine’s Future Board.
Students at the Biddeford Regional Center of Technology were recently selected student of the month. Heath Seeley from legal studies was selected for the business, early childhood and health programs and Gavin Cote from drafting was selected for the trade and technical programs.
Other students who were nominated for the student of the month award include: Kimberly Dao from introduction to medical dciences, Samantha Farley from retail/ marketing, Kaitlin Goulet from early childhood education, Cassie Rose from medical assisting, Tyler Souliere from cooperative education, Cory Tardiff from welding and Nick Webster from building trades.
The Rev. S. David Stanly has been appointed by Northern New England District of the Assemblies of God as senior pastor of Grace Family Church of Waterboro. He is a graduate of Lee University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Christian ministry. He also holds a business degree and currently is pursing his master’s degree at University of New England. He is married to Martha, and has three sons. Grace Family Church is located on Route 202 in Waterboro. Sunday morning service is at 10 a.m.
Don Gean of Old Orchard Beach has been nominated by Gov. John Baldacci to be reappointed to the board of the Maine State Housing Authority. Gean has served as executive director of York County Shelter Programs Inc. for 25 years. He has been active in numerous local, state and national organizations that are involved with homeless issues.
Jessica Maksut of Saco and Justin Masse of Biddeford were named to the dean’s list for the fall 2009 semester at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Conn.
Meghan Lambert of Saco has been named to the dean’s list for the fall semester at Maine College of Art in Portland. She is a senior majoring in graphic design.
Mary Francis Smith of Saco was one of several students interested in exploring graduate studies at USM honored with $500 scholarships. USM’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute’s advisory board recently held a reception in the Wishcamper Center, Portland, for recipients of the newly established “New Horizons Scholarship.”
Colleen Christian of Saco, a member of the class of 2012 and anthropology major, has been named to the dean’s list for the fall 2009 semester at Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pa. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul C. Christian and a graduate of Thornton Academy.
Dorota McKay of Saco and Eugene Wood of Biddeford were named to the president’s list at York County Community College for 4.0 grade-point average. The following students were named to the dean’s list at the college for earning a 3.5 average: Kaitlyn Cote, Steven Goozie, Kristy Laflamme and Regina Lapointe of Saco; Johnathan Green and Barbara Sykes of Old Orchard Beach; and Ashley Lemelin and Jerimiah Smith of Biddeford.
Navy Seaman Recruit Joshua J. Michaud, son of Debbie M. Michaud of Biddeford and Stephen J. Michaud of Biddeford, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. During the eight-week program, Michaud completed a variety of training that included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. Michaud is a 2008 graduate of Biddeford High School.
Elizabeth and Gerald Larose of Biddeford welcomed a grandson on Dec. 22, 2009. Cameron Thomas Fogg was born to Shannon Jamieson and Thomas Fogg of Lexington, Mass. His other grandparents are Roberta and Jack Scannell of Sullivan, N.H.
Isabelle Agnes Bryant was born Nov. 8, 2009, at Maine Medical Center to Steve and Shannon (Clark) Bryant III of Old Orchard Beach. Her paternal grandparents are Steve and Leta Bryant Jr. of Old Orchard Beach and maternal grandparents are Arnold and Cheryl Clark of Kennebunk. Her maternal great-grandmother is Harriet MacDonald of Wittmann, Ariz.
Author Doris Provencher Faucher of Biddeford recently published “Imperial Conquest,” the fourth historical novel of her Quebecois series. The family saga is based on genealogical and historical research of her early Canadian ancestors who experienced the evolution of the French colonial presence in North America from the mid-1600s to 1763. The book is published by Artenay Press.
