Saco Bay Artists to display
work during art walk Friday


    Works by members of Saco Bay Artists will be on exhibit at North Dam Mill from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday as part of the Biddeford ArtWalk.
Saco Bay Artists, an organization of local artists working in any medium, provides exhibition, critique and educational opportunities for members. The group meets on Monday in Ocean Park. For information on membership, contact Clara Martel at 985-7420 or artbyclara@roadrunner.com.

Thornton students to perform
Saturday during Dancelebration


    Thornton Academy’s annual Dancelebration performance is scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday in the Harry P. Garland II Auditorium. The snow date is Sunday at 7 p.m.
    This annual tradition provides students a chance to showcase their talent and allows them to collaborate with guest choreographers. All dances that will be presented are new, original works, choreographed and performed by students and professionals from the Maine dance community.
    Thornton Academy’s Dance Company is under the direction of Kathy Nolan. Nolan’s students will be joined by guest performers from Bates College, Collective Motion, Inner Motion Dance Ensemble and the TA Alumni Dancers.   
    Tickets are $6 for adults, $4 for students/senior citizens and $18 for a family ticket (two adults and two children). Tickets are available at the door for general seating. For more information, contact Nolan at kathy.nolan@thorntonacademy.org.

Information night planned
for eighth-grade students


    An information night for parents and eighth-graders on the transition to ninth grade will be held from 6 to 7:30, Wednesday, Feb. 3, in the Steve White Gym at Biddeford High School.
    Parents and students will learn about course offerings, the course sign-up process, graduation requirements, activities, sports and how to make the most of high school. A tour of the high school also is available.

OOB Democrats will caucus
Sunday at middle school


      Old Orchard Beach Democrats will gather for their 2010 municipal caucus on Sunday at Loranger Middle School in Old Orchard Beach.
      Doors will be open from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. for caucus registration and social hour. Light refreshments will be provided by the Old Orchard Beach Democratic Municipal Committee for this free community event.
At 1:30 p.m. doors will close and official caucus business begins. All registered Old Orchard Beach Democrats are invited to attend and take part in this bi-yearly function. Unregistered and unenrolled Old Orchard Beach residents may register and enroll in the Democratic Party from 1 to 1:30 p.m. and take part in the caucus.
      The afternoon program involves brief speeches by candidates and office holders, election of delegates to the state convention, as well as the election of poll workers and representatives to the York County Democratic Committee.
    The election of officers to serve on the Old Orchard Beach Democratic Municipal Committee for two-year terms will also take place. The Democratic state convention will take place on the weekend of  May 22  in Lewiston. On June 8, the party will hold a primary to choose its nominee for governor.

Biddeford’s Fifty Plus Club
to hold open house tonight


    Biddeford’s Fifty Plus Club at the Ross Center will hold an open house tonight from 3 to 7. The center is located at 189 Alfred St. in Biddeford.
    Members do not have to be Biddeford residents to join.
    The open house will include refreshments and a chance to meet the director, Debbie Lizotte, and her assistant, Stephanie McKellick. Visiting nurses will provide free blood pressure checks and H1N1 flu shots to those 50 or older, and spinal screenings will be done by Rolnick Chiropractic Wellness Center.
     Other activities include demonstrations of yoga, fitness, line dancing, karaoke and a bridge discussion.

College Goal Sunday offers
assistance with financial aid


    The Finance Authority of Maine (F.A.M.E.) in conjunction with Thornton Academy will host College Goal Sunday on Sunday at 2 p.m.
    The event will take place in the Atkinson Dining Commons at Thornton Academy. The program will guide parents through the FAFSA in a step-by-step manner. Financial aid professionals will make the presentation and will also be available for individual questions.

New cancer clinical trials
to be discussed tonight


    Dr. Can Ilyas, M.D. and Betsy Chase, research director of the Maine Center for Cancer Medicine, will discuss new cancer clinical trials and what they mean to a patient with a cancer diagnosis tonight from 5:30 to 7 in the SMMC classrooms.  Refreshments will be served.
     This session is open to participants at no cost due to financial support of private donations made to the Southern Maine Medical Center Cancer Care Program.  Space is limited and pre-registration is required by calling 283-7575.

Republicans plan breakfast
to mark Lincoln’s birthday


    The Saco Republican Committee will celebrate Abraham Lincoln’s birthday at 9 a.m. on Feb. 13 with a breakfast at the Holiday Inn Express in Saco.
    The speaker will be Dr. Jacque Carter, provost and vice president for academic affairs at University of New England, and a scholar of Abraham Lincoln.
    He is a native of Illinois and resides in Kennebunkport.
    Les Otten, a Republican gubernatorial candidate, also is on the program.

is Sunday at Ross Center


    The Biddeford Democratic caucus will be 3 p.m. Sunday at the Richard J. Martin Community Center, Ross Center, on Alfred Street. The city clerk will start registering people at 2:30 p.m.

Salvation Army to hold
clothes giveaway on Feb. 3

    The Salvation Army on the corner of Church and Sixth streets in Old Orchard Beach will hold a clothes give-away” Feb. 3, from 10 a.m. to noon and from 1 to 2p.m. for residents of Old Orchard Beach, Saco, Biddeford, Dayton and Arundel.

Free seasonal flu, H1N1 vaccines
available Saturday in Saco


    University Health Carea community-based health care provider in southern Maine, will offer free clinics for H1N1 and seasonal flu vaccines from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 30, at Saco Family Medicine, 655 Main St. in Saco.
      The Maine Center for Disease Control continues to encourage people to get vaccinated against H1N1, which comes in waves and is expected to surge again.
      People in Maine are still being hospitalized due to H1N1 and seasonal influenza.  Vaccination is the best protection before the next wave of disease.
    The UHC clinics are free and no appointment is required. The H1N1 vaccine is available in both flu mist and injectable forms; seasonal flu vaccine is flu mist.  

Saco Democrats to caucus
Sunday at Fairfield School


    The Saco Democratic caucus will be held Sunday at Fairfield School, 75 Beach St., Saco. Registration will be 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. and caucus begins at 1:30 p.m.

Dayton Democratic caucus
will be held at town hall


    Democrats in Dayton will caucus 1 p.m. Sunday at Dayton Town Hall to select delegates to the Democratic state convention, elect county committee members and discuss policy issues affecting all Maine people.
    Anyone not currently registered in a political party who would like to enroll as a Democrat may do so immediately at the town office or caucus.
    In case of snow, the alternate date will be Feb. 7 at the same time and place.
