Thornton orchestras
take listeners to movies
The Thornton Academy concert and symphony orchestras willpresent their first "Night at the Movies" at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb.11, in Garland Auditorium. The orchestra will perform selections from classicand contemporary movies while the audience watches highlights from the films.Movie selections include: “The Wizard of Oz,” “James Bond,” “Star Wars,”“Jurassic Park,” “Pride and Prejudice,” “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory”and others. Admission is $5, and concessions will be offered for purchase atintermission. The performance willbe directed by Anne Wilkinson and Jennifer Witherell-Stebbins with technicalsupport from David Hanright.
The Radio Gang will present a free concert at McArthur Library in Biddeford at 3 p.m. Sunday. The Radio Gang is a group of veteran musicians that has won acclaim from fans and critics for its live performance and recordings of vintage American country radio music from the 1930s and 1940s.
The Radio Gang presents a program of fiddle tunes, gospel, train songs, shout tunes, traditional bluegrass and ballads that tell tales of the Depression, heartbreak and love.

OOB alumni game is March 12
Players from yesteryear will take on today’s high school players during the Old Orchard Beach Alumni Association Basketball Classic on March 12. Tickets are $5 per person or $3 for students. All funds will benefit the alumni scholarship fund.

Nor’Easter Bowl at UNE
The University of New England’s Department of Marine Sciences will host the 2010 Nor’Easter Bowl on Saturday, Feb. 6, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the Biddeford campus. Final rounds are in Alfond starting at 4 p.m. and will be followed by an awards ceremony.
The Nor’easter Bowl is a regional competition of the National Ocean Sciences Bowl, an annual academic competition that tests high school students’ knowledge of marine sciences, including biology, chemistry, physics and geology. Each year, approximately 2,000 students from 300 schools across the nation compete for prizes and a trip to compete in the national competition.
During the regional Nor’easter Bowl, 19 teams of four to five students are tested on their knowledge of scientific and technical disciplines through quick-answer, buzzer questions and more complex team challenge problems. The winning team from Nor’easter Bowl will advance to the NOSB Finals competition April 23-25 at the University of South Florida in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Free dance workshops offered
School-age children and teens are invited to have fun and learn a new activity at two free workshops with instructors from local studio Get Up n’ Dance! Modern dance will be offered Feb. 16, and hip-hop dance on Feb. 18. Both workshops will be from 1 to 2 p.m., and registration is limited.
Participants may sign up for both classes or just one depending on preference and do not need to have prior experience with dance to join. For more information, contact Deanna Gouzie or Brooke Faulkner at 284-4181.
Reduced cost neutering, spaying
Local animal shelters and veterinarians hope to spay or neuter 1,000 cats during February to celebrate the 16th annual International Spay Day. Animal Medical Associates, in Saco, has decided to expand this goal to include dogs.
Pet owners may participate in spay day at a number of local animal hospitals. Cat owners wishing to qualify for special low-income pricing may call the Animal Welfare Society at 985-3244, ext. 120. Dog owners or any pet owner who does not qualify as “low income” still are eligible for reduced cost surgeries, and may contact Animal Medical Associates at 282-5151.
Surgery slots are limited and will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
Biddeford GOP meets Feb. 11
The Biddeford GOP City Committee will hold its final monthly meeting before the city caucus 6:30 p.m. Feb. 11 at the WonderBar Restaurant,Washington Street, Biddeford.
The caucus will be 2 p.m. March 13 at Biddeford Community Center.
Adoption, foster meeting
The Biddeford office of the Department of Health and Human Services will host a public informational meeting about adoption and foster care in Biddeford from 6 to 8 p.m. on Feb. 22. Contact A Family For ME at 1-877-505-0545 for the location and to participate.

European trip for students
Dance teacher Kathleen Nolan will take Thornton Academy students on an EF Educational Tour to Scotland, England and France.
The group of 20 students and three adults will explore Edinburgh, Lake District, Chester, Stratford, London and Paris during the 2010 spring vacation.
A meeting for the 2010 trip will be held at Dyer Library in Saco on Thursday, Feb. 25, from 6:15 to 7:45 p.m.

Beginner’s bridge class
A beginner’s bridge class will be held Thursday through April 8 from 1 to 3:30 p.m. at the Ross Center TV room.
The course covers rules of bridge, basics of the modern Standard American bidding system and guidelines on the best ways to take the most tricks possible.

Police academy classes start
Citizen Police Academy classes in Biddeford will resume Feb. 11. The classes are open to any resident who wants to learn about what the police department does.

Lions consider Saco club
Members of the International Association of Lions Clubs will be in the Saco area beginning next week to launch an effort to start a new Lions Club in Saco. An informational meeting has been scheduled for Feb. 10 at Saco City Hall, 300 Main St.
