Gerard E. Rousseau

 

Gerard E. “Clyde” Rousseau, 74, of Lyman, died Monday, Feb. 22, 2010, at Seal Rock Healthcare.

  He was born Dec. 7, 1935, in Berlin, N.H., to Louis Phillippe and Maria Helena (Marcotte) Rousseau and moved to this area as a child.  He was educated in Berlin, Portland and Biddeford schools and attended St. Louis High School.

Mr. Rousseau served with the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1957. On Sept. 26, 1959, he married Veronica Fontaine at St. Ignatius Church in Sanford.

He was employed at the Saco Tannery for several years, and then at New England Telephone, Bell Atlantic and Verizon for 20 years. After his retirement in 1993, he worked at Saco Defense as a security officer and was currently working as a driver for Saco auto dealers.

Mr. Rousseau belonged to the Fremont and Rochambeau Clubs, the York County Veterans Alliance and St. Louis Alumni.  He also was a volunteer with the Fairpoint Life Pioneers.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 42 years, Veronica Rousseau, on May 3, 2002, and his brother, Romeo Rousseau, in 1980.

Survivors include his daughter, Diane Gagnon and her husband, Gerard, of Manchester, N.H.; two grandchildren; his brother, Raymond Rousseau of Lake Alfred, Fla.; his sister, Juliette Landry of Lewiston; and several nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today at Hope Memorial Chapel, 480 Elm St., Biddeford. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Friday at St. Philip Church in Lyman, with burial in St. Joseph Cemetery in Biddeford.

Joan Ackley

 

Joan Ackley, 76, of Saco, died Friday, Feb. 19, 2010, at Mercy Hospital in Portland.

 She was born Jan. 30, 1934, in Biddeford to Frank and Lucy (Merrill) Poulin and was educated in Biddeford and Saco schools.  She was a 1952 graduate of Thornton Academy

On Sept. 29, 1956, she married George Ackley at St. David’s Episcopal Church in Kennebunk.

Mrs. Ackley enjoyed doing jigsaw puzzles, crafts of all kinds and craft painting.  She and her husband owned and operated a craft shop at Cole’s Corner in Wells.

Survivors include her husband, George Ackley of Saco; her daughter, Susan Smith and her husband, David; her sons,  Michael Ackley and his wife, Jennifer, and Stephen Ackley and his companion, April Martin, all of Saco; two brothers,  Lawrence Poulin and Ronald Poulin, both of Saco; a sister, Louise Nason of Dayton; and three grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held in the spring at South Buxton Cemetery at Tory Hill.

Arrangements are by Hope Memorial Chapel, Biddeford.

 

Doris S. Horsfield

 

Doris S. Horsfield, 97, of Biddeford, died Thursday Feb. 18, 2010, at Southern Maine Medical Center.

She was born Oct.16, 1912, in Biddeford to William and Alice Bennett Stelfox.  She attended schools in Pennsylvania, Connecticut and Kentucky and graduated from Bryant Stratton Business School.  She returned to this area as a small child. She worked for the Saco Lowell Shops in the office for 17 years, the Saco Biddeford Gas Co. for 10 years and retired in 1978.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clifton, and a son Edmund.

Survivors include a granddaughter Carol Burgess and her husband, Dale, of Saco; and a cousin, Malcolm Stelfox of England.

She was a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Biddeford.

A memorial service was held Wednesday at Christ Episcopal Church in Biddeford. Burial will be in the spring at Woodlawn Cemetery in Biddeford.

Donations in her memory may be made to the Maine Center for Cancer Medicine, 100 Campus Drive, Suite 108, Scarborough, ME 04074-9308.

Claude A. Prior

 

Claude Arnold Prior, 41, of Augusta, died Thursday, Feb.18, 2010, in Augusta, after falling into the Kennebec River.

 He was born Nov. 7, 1968, to Claude and Beatrice Buzulchuck Van Tassel. He attended Massabesic High School.

He worked for several years with his father at Van Tassel Auction in Standish. He enjoyed fishing, football, baseball and basketball.

He was preceded in death by his father, Claude Van Tassel, in 2009; his sister, Deborah Prior in 1996; and his brother, Ralph Prior, in 2001.

Survivors include his daughter, Ashley Ouellette of Augusta; his mother, Beatrice Van Tassel of Lyman; his sisters, Susan Bellman and Arline Laroche, both of Arundel; seven brothers, Charles and William Prior of Arundel, Michael and Thomas Prior of Biddeford, Scott Van Tassel of Biddeford, Steven Van Tassel of Saco and Wayne Van Tassel of Portland; two grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was Wednesday at Hope Memorial Chapel, Biddeford.

Arrangements were by Hope Memorial Chapel.

 

 Carmen H. Campbell

 

Carmen Houle Campbell, 76, died Saturday, Feb. 13, 2010, at Maine Medical Center in Portland after a long illness. She was formerly of Lewiston, Old Orchard Beach and later Westbrook.

She was born April 30, 1933, in Durham to Aime and Lea Levasseur Houle.

She attended Holy Family Schools in Lewiston. At the age of 40 she earned her CNA. She was a hard-working woman from a very young age until she was unable to work due to ill health. She worked as a CNA at the Marcotte Home in Lewiston during the 1950s and ’60s. She later worked at the Waves Motel in Old Orchard Beach as a translator and assistant manager and as a CNA at Trull Nursing Home.

She loved playing the piano, country music, drawing, Beano and playing checkers with her great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Raymond Houle, and sister, Yolande.

She is survived by her daughter, Patricia (Patsy Campbell) Hall of Biddeford; two granddaughters, Angele Rice of Bath and Kimberly Dudley of Chesapeake, Va.; four great-grandchildren, John Rice of Bath and Kristopher, Taylor and Theron Dudley of Virginia; her sister-in-law Valerie Houle; her niece, Anita Wood; her newphews, Raymond Jr. and Larry Houle, all of the Jay area; and her friends at Dolly Farm Facility in Westbrook, Michelle, Helen and Joyce.

There will be no funeral service. Interment will be private at St. Peter-St. Paul Cemetery in Lewiston this spring.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in her memory to National Alliance for the Mentally Ill, 1 Bangor St., Augusta, ME 004330.

 

Robert Hollingworth

 

Robert Edgar Hollingworth of Saco, formerly of Woodstock, Conn., died Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2010, of lymphoma diagnosed in 2006.

He was born in 1941 in Fall River, Mass., to Robert S. and Louise Hoye Hollingworth.

He graduated from Case High School in 1959. After graduation he joined the Navy and served for 20 years until he retired in 1979.

In 1984 he married Linda Labonte in Putnam, Conn.

He last worked before retiring again in 2003 at Allegro Micro Systems in Worchester, Mass. In 2004 the couple moved to Saco and he worked full time as a sculptor and showed his work in galleries in Maine and Connecticut.

He was preceded in death by his father, Robert; his brother, Howard; and his son, Ronnie Hollingworth.

Survivors include his mother, Louise Hollingworth; his wife, Linda Hollingworth; his children, Eugene Hollingworth and his wife, Tammy, of Putnam, Conn., Holly Rogers and her husband, Mike, of Georgia, Gina Grant and her husband, Sean, of Worcester, Mass., Kim Murray and her husband, Rob, of Nevada, Krista Deary and her husband, Shawn, of Putnam, Conn., Todd Foley of Putnam, Conn., and David Foley of Dayville, Conn.; his brother, James Hollingworth and his wife, Lynn, of Southbridge, Mass,; sisters Anne Buffinton of Putnam, Conn., and Jean Turgeon and her husband, Peter, of Illinois; 11 grandchildren, Katie, Kelly, Chelsea, Josh, Emma, Kyle, Drew, Rachel, Nathaniel, Maya and Madison, and a great-grandson, Kalem.

Burial will be private at Mr. Hollingworth’s request.

Germaine C. Bisson

 

Germaine C. Bisson, 81, of Biddeford, died Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2010, at Monarch Center, Saco, after a long illness.

She was born March 5, 1928, in Berlin, N.H. to Alfred W. and Rose Marie (Labrecque) Cayer. She attended Berlin, N.H., schools.

On Nov. 24, 1945, she married Urbain A. Bisson at St. Andre Church, Biddeford.

She last worked as a stitcher at the Pepperell Mills for many years prior to her retirement. Previously, she assisted her husband for more than 18 years with the former family-owned Bisson’s Market.

Mrs. Bisson was a parishioner of St. Joseph Church, Biddeford, for many years. She also was a former member of the Daughters of Isabella. She enjoyed reading, jigsaw puzzles, sewing and caring for her pet birds. She loved spending time with her children and grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Urbain A. Bisson; two brothers, Philip and Paul Cayer; two sisters, Lea Poulin and Marie Tremblay; and a grandson, Kevin Bisson.

Survivors include three sons, Paul R. Bisson and his wife, Louise, of Lyman, Richard J. Bisson and his wife, Lorraine, of Arundel, and Norman L. Bisson and his wife, Jacinthe, of Biddeford; her daughter, Diane D. Cote and her husband, Roger Y., of Lyman; 15 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
