Letters to the editor
To the editor:
Throughout 2009 we watched
our local, state and federal budgets hit all-time lows. Official opinion might
say we came out of it with a zero increase to taxes and no loss of services.
Others might disagree.
We fight for a healthy and
safer world everyday. As Democrats we believe in various issues from affordable
universal healthcare, investing in education, workers’ rights, women’s rights,
elderly rights and civil rights. A line from the Democratic Party Charter and
bylaws reads: “At the heart of our party lies a fundamental conviction, that
Americans must not only be free, but they must live in a fair society.”
It is hard for most
Americans to make the trek to D.C. and voice their opinions. For some, even
driving to the state capitol might be out of the question. This is where
getting together with your local Democratic city committee comes in; it is a
place to come and share ideas and engage other Democrats and talk one on one
with candidates.
I love Maine history, and
Biddeford is rich with it. Democrats have led the fight for a better life in
Biddeford for years. The people fought for unions in the mills, elected leaders
like Dutremble, Muskie, Brennan and Clinton, and it all started with people
talking to people about what was best for our city. I invite you to come and
share your ideals, passions and vision for the future of the Democratic party
in Biddeford, Maine and the country.
Being a part of the
Biddeford City Democratic Committee is not just about electing a Democrat, it
is about electing someone to represent the ideas and ideals of the party and
the people. The committee will meet 6 p.m., Monday at the Ross Center in the
J.R. Martin Center, 189 Alfred St.

To the editor:
We live in the greatest
country in the world. The United States of America has been the world’s beacon
for freedom, prosperity, creative ingenuity, medicine, charity and much, much
more. Some of our political leaders
don’t believe this anymore. Some
of our citizens also don’t even believe this anymore either.
What our country needs are
leaders in the founders’ mold. Our
founding fathers wrote a document that has withstood the test of time, our
Constitution. The Constitution has
lasted as the oldest document of freedom and prosperity the world has ever
known. Many of our leaders have
taken an oath to uphold this document but they continually vote for things that
are unconstitutional.
Now is the time to get
involved. We need to start electing leaders that believe in good, old-fashioned
ingenuity, prosperity, freedom, capitalism and the Constitution. This can start
2 p.m. March 13 at J.R. Martin Community Center on Alfred Street in Biddeford,
when the Biddeford Republican Party will hold its biennial caucus.
During the caucus we will
elect a new leadership team and voting members. We will also have time to hear from many new leaders running
for public office in November. We will have candidates running for governor and
the Legislature. We will also have representatives for elected leaders in the
U.S. Senate and Dean Scontras as
candidate for the 1st District Congressional seat.
The greatest thing our
founders gave us is freedom of speech and the ability to elect our
leaders. I look forward to seeing
you at this event and starting the process of electing new leaders for our
local state and federal offices.
Marc Worrell
Biddeford
