Ralph N. Harris
Ralph N. Harris, 76,
formerly of Manchester-By-The-Sea and Rockport, Mass., passed away peacefully
at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough on March 2, 2010, with
Doris, his wife of more than 26 years, and family at his side.
Mr. Harris fought valiantly
for many years against multiple myeloma and melanoma and had a stroke in
January 2009. He received an
achievement award in September 2009 for having overcome barriers and exceeding
expectations in his recovery of the stroke.
After recovering from his
stroke, Mr. Harris volunteered to paint several signs and to make, paint and
install the “Book Shed” sign for the Friends of Libby Library in Old Orchard
Beach.
Born to Lucille (Clarke) and
Edmund Harris in 1933, Mr. Harris graduated from Story High School in
Manchester, and attended Knox College in Illinois and University of
Connecticut. Mr. Harris enlisted in the Navy and served in the Submarine
Service during the Korean War.
Mr. Harris was employed for
37 years by the telephone company, beginning as a coin collector in 1955 and
working his way up to management, and was on board during the time of the
“great divestiture.”
Mr. Harris married in 1955
and lived in Manchester, Mass., and raised four daughters. He volunteered in
the school system and was a member of the Manchester Lodge of Masons. In recent years he also was a member of
the Manchester American Legion.
Mr. Harris married Doris
(Nieberle) Nelson and moved to Rockport, Mass., in 1984. During his retirement year, his
greatest love – aside from their annual trips to Key West and preparing gourmet
meals – was golf, which kept him going during his illness as the thought of
spring and each new golfing season gave him motivation and energy. An avid and
competitive player who played in several Pro-Am tournaments, he was a member of
the Rockport Golf Club in Rockport, Mass., and after moving to Maine in 2006,
joined Dunegrass Golf Club in Old Orchard Beach.
Mr. Harris is survived by
his wife, Doris; his former wife, Ann M. Harris and their four daughters: Paige
Harris, Patricia “Trish” Goodwin and husband, Daniel, Paula Harris, all of
Beverly, Mass., and Pamela Pimentel and grandson Kyle Pimentel of Epping, N.H.,
and former son-in-law Chris Pimentel.
He also leaves a step-daughter, Nancy Mae of Madison, Wis.,
and her daughter, Nyla Thursday, and a step-son Erik Nelson and wife, Rhonda,
of Rockport, Mass., along with their children, Josh, Tia and Robert. He leaves one brother, Richard Harris
and his wife, Ruth, of Wallingford, Conn., and many nieces, grandnieces,
nephews and grandnephews.
Mr. Harris was predeceased
by his older brother, Earl Harris.
We will all miss his
presence among our daily lives along with his award-winning recipes, which he
shared freely, and especially at Dewar’s time.
Funeral services will be
private as requested and arranged by the Old Orchard Beach Funeral Home, 36
Portland Ave., Old Orchard Beach.
In remembrance of Mr.
Harris, donations may be made to Hospice of Southern Maine, 180 U.S. Route 1,
