Dayton
man faces OUI charge after accident
A Dayton
man was charged with operating under the influence after police said he hit a
car stopped for a school bus.
Steven
Kaloyares, 22, was charged with operating under the influence, operating after
suspension, operating with an open container of alcohol and insurance
violations following a Monday morning crash on Smutty Lane in Saco.
Cpl.
Michael Maksut of the Saco Police Department said Kaloyares was traveling west
on Smutty Lane at high speeds and could not stop in time to avoid hitting a GMC
Yukon driven by Tina Curit, 40, of Saco.
Curit
was taken to Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford, but the six children
riding in her car were not injured. Maskut said the children ranged in age from
3 to 7.
Kaloyares
and his female passenger also were transported to the Biddeford hospital.
Candidates file with
state; Dion out of race
Secretary
of State Matthew Dunlap announced Monday that 551 people have filed as
candidates for the June 8 primary election.
Filers
included 12 gubernatorial candidates, four candidates for the United States
House of Representatives and 426 candidates for 186 seats in the Maine
Legislature. There were also 109 candidates for county offices, Dunlap said in
a press release.
Candidates
seeking nomination for county, state and federal seats are required by law to
gather signatures from members of their political party in the district they
wish to represent. Town and city clerks verify the signatures before they are
submitted to the Secretary of State by March 15.
Former
Biddeford Mayor Donna Dion did not submit paperwork to run as a Democratic
candidate for governor. She announced last July she was running as a
clean-election candidate.
In Old
Orchard Beach, state Rep. George Hogan will be challenged by William Gombar and
Clarence Stewart to represent District 132. Rep. Donald Pilon of Saco is being
challenged for the District 133 seat by Clarence Stewart. Mary Schiavoni and
Roger Gay of Saco are challenging incumbent Linda Valentino to represent
District 134.
Paulette
Beaudoin and Marc Worrell of Biddeford are both running to represent District
135. Candidates for District 136 in Biddeford are Bobby Mills, Megan Rochelo
and W. Sturgis Whalen. Suzanne Sexton is challenging incumbent Alan Casavant
for the District 137 seat.
York
County Sheriff Maurice Ouellette of Cornish is running for re-election. He is
challenged by Paul Main of Alfred and Craig Gagne of Sanford.
Grand jury indicts Saco
man
A Saco man charged with an
alleged midnight burglary spree in Scarborough, accompanied by his dog, was
indicted March 5 by a Cumberland County grand jury.
Richard
R. Martin Jr., a Ross Road resident, must appear in Cumberland County Superior
Court April 27 to face two counts of burglary, four counts of theft, one count
of criminal mischief and one count of violating his conditions of release.
Court
documents and police statements allege Martin crossed the town line between
Saco and Scarborough on Ross Road early Jan. 30 and broke into one house and
four cars. Martin is also accused of trying to break into another home. The
spree was discovered by a man who woke up to find Martin and his dog in his
bedroom.
When
told to leave, police said Martin then broke into a car owned by the victim.
The victim told police he watched from inside and then set off the car alarm by
remote control to scare Martin away.
Martin
allegedly attempted to break into a nearby home and cut his thumb after
breaking a window, according to police statements.
As he
continued along Ross Road toward its intersection with Pine Point Road, Martin
is alleged to have broken into several more cars and left bloodstains and a
trail of items taken from the first home he burglarized.
Scarborough
police officers, one using a thermal imaging camera that detects body heat, and
an Old Orchard Breach Police canine team eventually tracked Martin to Pine
Point Road. When detained, Martin and his dog were described as cooperative,
and Martin was also described as “visibly intoxicated,” according to court
records.
Police
statements said Martin was wearing dress shoes taken from the home he allegedly
burglarized and carried a backpack with soda and a bottle of rum when he was
stopped. Burglary victims told police the shoes were exchanged for boots Martin
had been wearing.
Martin
received three stitches for his cut thumb before he was taken to Cumberland
County Jail in Portland. Martin’s father picked up the dog at the Scarborough
police station, according to court documents.
Court
records show Martin, who said he is a self-employed painter, has prior
convictions on misdemeanor charges of assault, burglary, criminal mischief,
violating conditions of release and harassment by phone dating back to 2007.
