Holy Week services, events

Holy Week events at Union Church, 3 Stonecliff Road in Biddeford Pool, will begin with Maundy Thursday service 7 p.m. April 1 at the church.  Wiley Beveridge will provide music for the service, which will feature a celebration of the Last Supper.

Easter sunrise service will be 6 a.m.  April 4 at 20 Ocean Ave. in Biddeford Pool, followed by a free Easter breakfast in the fire barn at Biddeford Pool Fire Station from 7 to 8:30 a.m.

The traditional Easter service will be at 10 a.m. in the church with music by Michelle Currie and Wiley Beveridge.

St. Augustine of Canterbury Church will hold a traditional Tenebrae Service on Monday, March 29, at 7 p.m. at Cathedral Pines Chapel, 156 Saco Road, in Old Orchard Beach.

Participating in the service along with the parish vicar will be the Rev. Dr. Nash Garabedian Jr., port chaplain for the Port of Portland.  The service is taken from an early Christian worship service recalling the Passion of Christ. The name Tenebrae is the Latin word for “darkness” or “shadows.” The service recalls a small portion of Christ’s pain and suffering the day of crucifixion. The prayers and meditations help to prepare Christians for the end of Holy Week ending in Christ’s death upon the cross.

One of the most conspicuous features of the service is the gradual extinguishing of candles. As it gets darker and darker one can reflect on the great emotional and physical pain that was very real for Jesus.  The service concludes with the seven last words of Christ from the cross.

The service is part of the Holy Week devotions and services of the parish.  Maundy Thursday Service is at 7 p.m. on April 1 and Good Friday, April 2, will be Stations of the Cross, also at 7 p.m.

Joyful Harvest Community Center and Second Congregational Church will offer a pre-Easter celebration Saturday, April 3, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the church, 19 Crescent St. in Biddeford.

The celebration will feature a free pancake breakfast and original Easter skits written and performed by the tweens and teens group of Joyful Harvest.

The event is free and open to all ages. For more information, call Joyful Harvest, 286-9105.

A Good Friday service will be held 7 p.m. April 2 at Bible Baptist Church, 146 Ferry Road, Saco. For more information, call 284-7338.
