Lucille M. Merrifield

Lucille M. Merrifield, 69, of Lyman, died Wednesday, June 23, 2010, at Evergreen Manor, Saco.

She was April 28, 1941, in Beacon, N.Y., to Joseph J. and Rafaella (Corrado) Gerentine. She attended Beacon High School and graduated in 1960.

She attended Newburgh Academy Beauty School and worked a few years as a beautician.

On Sept. 30, 1967, she married David R. Merrifield in Livingston, N.Y. Mr. Merrifield died Jan. 4, 2007, after almost 40 years of marriage.

Mrs. Merrifield worked 30 years at New York Telephone Co. and retired in 1996. 

She volunteered at Southern Maine Medical Center and the YMCA. She enjoyed bowling and loved going to the beach, especially Old Orchard Beach. She was a member of the 50 Plus Club of Biddeford and St. Philip Church in Lyman.

Survivors include her brother, Joseph M. Gerentine and his wife, Ellen, of Beacon, N.Y.; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Arrangements were by Hope Memorial Chapel, Biddeford.

Virginia Cote Smyth

Virginia Cote Smyth, 86, of Saco, died Monday, June 21, 2010, at Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford with her husband, Charles, and niece, Paula, by her side.

She was born Jan. 26, 1924, in Biddeford to Armand and Elizabeth Driscoll Cote. She graduated from Biddeford High School in 1941.

Mrs. Smyth was employed for 42 years in the payroll department at Maremont Corp. of Saco.

She enjoyed crossword and word puzzles, was an avid dancer and parishioner of Most Holy Trinity Church, Good Shepherd Parish, Saco.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Paul Cote, and sister, Eleanor Barnes Tousignant.

Survivors include her husband of 44 years, Charles C. Smyth of Saco; three stepsons, Charles Richard Smyth of Homer, Alaska, Timothy Smyth of Millinocket and Terence Smyth of Medway; two stepdaughters, Margaret Lapikas of Oregon and Elizabeth Langley of Anchorage, Alaska; eight step-grandchildren, 14 step-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Arrangements were by Cote Funeral Home, Saco.

Jon A. Mills

Jon A. Mills, 65, of Saco, died unexpectedly Monday, June 21, 2010, at Southern Maine Medical Center.

  He was born July 25, 1944, in Newport, N.H., to Arthur C. and Effie May (Farewell) Mills and was educated in Newport schools. He completed his education at the University of New Hampshire, graduated in 1966 and moved to this area in 1970.

Mr. Mills served as a first lieutenant with the U.S. Army from 1967 until 1969. 

On Oct. 16, 1970, he married Sharon Langlois in Biddeford.

Mr. Mills worked as a state probation and parole officer for over 33 years and also worked several years as the security supervisor at the former Grant’s Department Store.

Mr. Mills was a former coach for the PeeWee Football and the Senior Baseball Leagues in Biddeford for several years. He enjoyed cooking and gardening and watching Yankees baseball games and football games. He treasured time he spent with his grandchildren and loved attending their sporting events.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Harold A. Mills.

Survivors include his wife of almost 40 years, Sharon L. Mills of Saco; two sons, Todd C. Mills and his wife, Francine Alves, of Gorham and Keith A. Mills and his wife, Ashley, of Kennebunk; three grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Arrangements were by Hope Memorial Chapel, Biddeford.

Thomas P. Mayne

Thomas P. Mayne, 58, of Old Orchard Beach, died Tuesday, June 15, 2010, at his home.

  He was born Nov. 30, 1951, in Athol, Mass., to Paul and Elizabeth (Ryan) Mayne. He was educated at the Lenox School in Lenox, Mass., and graduated in 1971.

Mr. Mayne served in Vietnam with the U.S. Air Force until February 1973.  

On April 24, 1982, he married Diane Chretien in Biddeford.

He worked as a self-employed lobsterman until he became disabled 10 years ago.

Mr. Mayne was a member of the Outlaw Motorcycle Club and enjoyed the time he spent riding with club members.  He also enjoyed making music on his guitar, surfing, playing hockey, fishing and lobstering.  He was known to have a “green thumb” and spent many hours gardening with his wife. 

Survivors include his wife of 28 years, Diane Mayne of Old Orchard Beach; two daughters, Alison Mayne of Scarborough and Erin Nason of Saco; and his brother-in-law, Ken Chretien of Old Orchard Beach.

Arrangements were by Hope Memorial Chapel, Biddeford.

Joseph Cordeau

Joseph “Tom” Cordeau, formerly of Biddeford and Old Orchard Beach, died May 28 in Mesa, Ariz.

He was the eldest son of Albert and Maria Arcand Cordeau Toussaint of Biddeford.

He was an athlete who played baseball, football and basketball. He continued to play semi-professional baseball and softball for several years.

Mr. Cordeau served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was an original member, or “plank owner,” of the air craft carrier USS Midway.

He married Ellen Bedell of Biddeford Pool in 1947. She died in 1986. 

Cordeau was a lifetime member of several clubs and organizations, including the Elks, Amvets, Eagles, VFW and the Rochambeau Club. 

Surviving is a daughter, Leah Marquis, of Mesa, Ariz., and son in law, Roland; a brother, Roland A. Toussaint Sr. of Saco; six grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and seven great great grandchildren along with several nieces,  nephews and cousins.

A graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m., July 2 at St. Joseph Cemetery, West Street, Biddeford. Friends and family are invited.

Norman Poirier

Norman Poirier, 66, of Saco, died Saturday June 26, 2010, at Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford.

He was born Dec. 25, 1943 in Biddeford a son of Albany and Claire Lebrecque Poirier. He graduated from Biddeford High School.

He is survived by two daughters, Catherine Poirier of Limington and Deborah Wentworth and her husband Mathew of Buxton; two brothers, Roland Poirier and his wife Cecile of Saco and Maurice Poirier and his wife Carol of Biddeford; one sister, Lorraine Poirier Bouchard and her husband Gary of Saco; His aunt Pauline Lebrecque and uncle Lucien Lamontagne; two grandchildren, Sarah and Benjamin Wentworth; and five nieces and one nephew.

Arrangements are by Cote Funeral Home.

Ernestine Inkel

Ernestine Inkel, 74, of Biddeford died Friday, June 25, 2010 at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough after a long illness with pancreatic cancer. 

Arrangements were by Hope Memorial Chapel, Biddeford.

Jean B. Perry

Jean B. Perry, 83, of Saco and formerly of Rumford, died Friday, June 25, 2010 at Seal Rock Healthcare in Saco.

She was born on Nov. 24, 1926 in Peru, a daughter of Glendon and Ethlyn Kidder Babb.

She is survived by her husband of 52 years Peter J. Perry of Rumford; two daughters, Janet P. Leach and her husband John of Greenland, N.H., Nancy P. Letellier and her husband Kevin of Saco; and one granddaughter, Jenifer M. Horvath.

Arrangements are by Cote Funeral Home, Saco.

Timothy M. McCoy

Timothy Michael McCoy, 49, of Saco died Saturday, June 19, 2010, at his residence. Arrangements were by Cote Funeral Home, Saco.
