An Old Orchard Beach man was indicted last week for
manslaughter in the death of a Saco woman who was struck by his van as she
walked to church. Walter Fleury, 67, of Old Orchard Beach, was indicted
last week by a York County grand jury on one count of manslaughter for the July
11 car accident that killed Constance “Connie” Orendorf as she crossed Route 1
to attend a Sunday morning service at Trinity Episcopal Church. Orendorf, 74, was crossing the road in a marked
crosswalk at 9:40 a.m. when she was struck by Fleury’s 2000 Chrysler Voyager
van, Police Chief Bradley Paul said at the time. Fleury initially was charged
with operating under the influence after failing field sobriety tests,
according to police. Orendorf was taken by ambulance to Maine Medical Center
in Portland, where she later died, surrounded by family. She is survived by her
daughter Cara St. Louis-Farrelly of Saco and three grandchildren. St. Louis-Farrelly said in July that her mother was
“fiercely independent” and passionate about music. After earning a degree in
piano and bassoon from Western State College in Colorado, Orendorf supported
her two children by teaching music and later working as a technical writer. Orendorf taught music to Pueblo children in New
Mexico while working for the Bureau of Indian Affairs. She also taught music in
Guam and traveled to other places overseas for work, filling her home with
souvenirs from her travels, according to her family. Orendorf moved to Saco from New Mexico last year to
be closer to her grandchildren, Hal, Anastasia and Duncan St. Louis-Farrelly,
who were all involved with arts programs at Thornton Academy. Orendorf attended
all Thornton Academy shows, even if her grandchildren weren’t performing. “She saw everything that everyone did,” St. Louis-Farrelly
said in July. “That was her form of entertainment. She absolutely adored it.
People tell me that’s all she ever talked about.” Staff Writer Gillian Graham can be reached at
