Arthur A. Dube
Arthur A. Dube of Biddeford died Monday, Nov. 15, 2010, surrounded by family at the Maine Veteran’s Home in Scarborough.
He was born Sept. 5, 1920, in Biddeford and grew up on Pike Street as one of 18 children of Edmond and Aurore Lamirande Dube.
In his younger years he worked at Bates Mill and then at the South Portland Shipyard, where he learned to be a welder. Mr. Dube joined the U.S. Army Infantry during World War II, where he fought in the North Africa campaign and later in Italy, where he was wounded. He received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star.
After the war ended, while waiting to travel back to the United States, he played baseball for the U.S. team in Florence, Italy. He liked to tell the story of the time he and an Army buddy redirected an Army truck full of food to a local orphanage and how happy the nuns were to see all that food for the children.
He returned to Biddeford, where in 1946 he married Annette Babineau. After a few years working at Saco-Lowell Shops, he began work at Portsmouth Navy Yard, where he was a welder and painter for 34 years until his retirement in 1986.
Mr. Dube was a communicant at St. Andre Church; a life member of AMVETS-Disabled American Veterans; past president of St. Andre Credit Union and a credit union board member for 18 years. He also was on the board of directors of the former St. Andre Parent Teachers Association. Despite having to drop out of school to work and support the family, Mr. Dube was a math wiz and often raced children with calculators in adding long columns of numbers. He knew the value of higher education and made sure all four of his children attended college and in retirement got his GED.
After retirement from the Navy yard, he wintered Nalcrest, Fla., until this year. He continued to play softball on the Nalcrest Softball Team and in 2009 his number was retired by the team. He picked up the game of golf and played on a regular basis in a local men’s league. He was very proud of his hole-in-one shot in 1998 at age 78. He also very much enjoyed playing cards and playing his part as bandleader in the Nalcrest Men’s Literary Club.
He is survived by his wife, Annette, of Biddeford; four children, Joyce Stephens and husband, Jay, of Dover, N.H., Donald Dube and wife, Marianna, of Unionville, Conn., Nancy Horne and husband, Rob, of Gorham, and Gary Dube and wife, Candice, of Gorham; brothers Robert Dube of Biddeford and Noel (Pete) Dube of Saco; sisters Laurette Beaudoin, Mrs. Urbain (Irene) Chretien, Mrs. Maurice (Yvonne) Nolette, Mrs. Rene (Cecile) Bisson, six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
