Biddeford students and parents were invited to take a step back in time Monday as Pilgrims described their experiences in the New World.
Fourth-grade students at Biddeford Intermediate School dressed in costume to lead guests on “Pilgrim tours” Monday. Teacher Rob Petit said 48 students spent nearly a month studying Pilgrims for a project that culminated with the tours. Students had to learn five facts about their adopted Pilgrim and could only speak in character.
Gage Stoddard, 10, dressed as Miles Standish, said he created a replica of a Pilgrim fort using popsicle sticks, green foam and spray paint. He said his favorite part of the project was a trip to Plimoth Plantation in Massachusetts.
“I think that was the funnest field trip I’ve had in my whole life,” Stoddard said.
Nearby, Sam Mills greeted guests in character as Gov. William Bradford. He agreed the trip to Plimoth Plantation was fun and educational.
“I actually felt like I had traveled back in time,” he said.
Gabe Peaslee, 9, used wax, string and cold water to create candles similar to those used by Pilgrims. He dressed as John Howland, who was famous for having many descendants. Taylor Wildes, 9, dressed as Howland’s wife, Elizabeth Tilley Howland. Cradling a baby named Desire, Wildes described how she hand-sewed a small doll and quilt for her project.
After spending the afternoon giving tours to other elementary school students, the Pilgrims gathered again for evening tours for parents, family and friends.
