Conrad R. Grenier

 

Conrad R. Grenier, 75, of Biddeford, died Sunday, Feb. 27, 2011, at St. Mary’s Regional Hospital in Lewiston.

He was born Aug. 19, 1935, in Biddeford, to Emile and Rose (Huot) Grenier and was educated in Biddeford schools.

Mr. Grenier served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War.

On Oct. 26, 1957, he married Alice Binette at St. Andre Church.

Mr. Grenier worked in local shoe shops for several years and then at the Pepperell and Biddeford Textile companies for more than 20 years.  He was last employed for 16 years by Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and retired in 1999.

An avid sports fan, Mr. Grenier enjoyed following professional sports teams, especially the Boston Red Sox and Celtics.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice, on June 19, 2006; five sisters, Pauline Grenier, Blanche Lajoie, Beatrice Nava, Rose Haidsyz and Violette Perreault; and three brothers, Leo, Rene and Emile Grenier.

Survivors include two sons, Roger E. Grenier and his companion, Crystal Ditomaso, and Richard W. Grenier and his companion, Erika Perreault, both of Biddeford; two brothers, Andrew Grenier of New Port Richey, Fla., and Roland Grenier of Winchendon, Mass.; and four grandchildren.

Arrangements were by Hope Memorial Chapel, Biddeford.

 

Antoinette Labelle

 

Antoinette “Toni” Labelle, 77, of Biddeford, died Sunday, Feb. 27, 2011, at Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford with her family by her side.

She was born Oct. 18, 1933, in Saco, to Flory and Laura Guay Lamirande. She was a 1951 Thornton Academy graduate.

On Sept. 11, 1954, she married her husband, Arthur, and they relocated to Hartford, Conn., where they raised their twin sons. The family moved back to Saco in 1968.

Mrs. Labelle was employed by Saco & Biddeford Savings Institution for 28 years and retired in 1997.

She was an avid reader. Her hobbies included knitting and crocheting. Most of all, she loved spending summers with her family at Little Ossipee Lake.

Mrs. Labelle was a parishioner of the former Notre Dame de Lourdes Church, Good Shepherd Parish, in Saco.

She was  preceded in death by her husband, Arthur, on May 15, 2001.

Survivors include her two sons, Michael Labelle and his wife, Janice, and Robert Labelle and his wife, Sandy, both of Biddeford; her twin sister, Yvette Blanchette and her husband, Robert, of Saco; three grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, two nieces and one nephew.

Arrangements were by Cote Funeral Home, Saco.

 

Lucille I. O’Connor

 

Lucille I. O’Connor, 90, of Biddeford, died Friday, Feb. 25, 2011, at Southridge Rehabilitation and Living Center.

She was born Jan. 22, 1921, in Lowell, Mass., to Arthur and Lucy Simard Dubois and was a 1939 Lowell High School graduate. She moved to the Biddeford area in 1941 and was employed at the Saco-Lowell shops for many years.

On July 6, 1947, she married Lawrence O’Connor at St. Joseph Church in Biddeford.

Mrs. O’Connor volunteered at Southridge Living Center and also worked at the St. Mary Parish summer fair.  She enjoyed reading and watching football.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence, on Sept. 8, 1985.

Survivors include her daughter, Carolyn Barden of Old Orchard Beach; a brother, Arthur Dubois of Burlington, Mass.; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Arrangements were by Hope Memorial Chapel, Biddeford.

 

Aldea M. Elie

 

Aldea M. Elie, 97, of Biddeford, died Friday, Feb. 25, 2011, at Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford.

She was born May 28, 1913, in Victoriaville, Quebec, Canada, to Moise and Georgianna Desharnais Dore and was educated in Canada.

On June 7, 1947, she married Edmond J. Elie at St. Martyr Church in Victoriaville, Quebec. He died Jan. 29, 2002.

Mrs. Elie worked 26 years at Landry’s Laundry in Biddeford and retired in 1978. She also worked a few years at the Alouette Motel in Old Orchard Beach.

She enjoyed collecting figurines and was a member of the Daughters of Isabella.

She was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.

Survivors include her daughter, Rolande Raymond, and her husband, John, of Biddeford; one grandson, four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Arrangements were by Hope Memorial Chapel, Biddeford.

 

Lawrence R. Plante

 

Lawrence R. Plante, 72, of Biddeford, died Thursday, Feb. 24, 2011, at Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford.

He was born June 12, 1938, in Biddeford, to Arthur J. and Germaine (Boisvert) Plante. He was a 1957 St. Louis High School graduate.

Mr. Plante served in the U.S. Navy and after his military service worked 10 years as a police officer in Biddeford and Kennebunk. He then worked several years as a security agent at Value House Stores throughout New England. He last was employed as a bus driver for the Biddeford Shuttle Bus and VIP Bus Tours in Portland and retired in 2003.

He enjoyed singing, playing the bass guitar and the organ as a member of several local bands. He also loved riding his motorcycle and boating.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Priscilla Fletcher, in 2009.

Survivors include his three sons, David R. Plante, Brian E. Plante and Daryn Plante, all of Biddeford; two daughters, Catherine Sylvestre and Christine Plante, both of Biddeford; two brothers, Donald R. Plante and his wife, Doris, of Biddeford and Normand Plante and his wife, Ella, of Limerick; 10 grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Arrangements were by Hope Memorial Chapel, Biddeford.

 

Hope B. Griffiths

 

Hope B. Griffiths, 86, of Kennebunk, died Thursday, Feb. 24, 2011, at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough.

She was born April 8, 1924, in Detroit, Mich., to Edwin L. and Adalaide H. (Bevins) Vashaw. She was educated in Detroit schools and attended the University of Michigan.

On June 14, 1941, she married Walter G. Griffiths at Hope Lutheran Church in Detroit, Mich.

Mrs. Griffiths was employed for eight years during World War II by Chrysler Corp. She then worked two years at Udylite Corp and five years at Montgomery Ward Department Store in Detroit. She last worked 11 years at First of America Bank Corp in Troy, Mich., and retired in 1972.

She moved to this area in 1985. She loved tending her houseplants, especially her African violets, caring for her cats, crocheting, sewing and other home crafts.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter G. Griffiths, in 1988; her son, Walter Louis Griffiths; and two sisters, Mary Ann Edie and Dorothy Shayshinger.

Survivors include her son, Patrick Harmon Griffiths of Arundel; seven grandchildren and 31 great- and great-great grandchildren

Ingrid J. Clark

 

Ingrid J. Clark, 85, of Saco, died Thursday, Feb. 24, 2011, at Seal Rock Healthcare Facility.

She was born Aug. 21, 1925, in Garland to John and Gertrude (Pearson) Olson. She attended Garland High School in Dexter and Faye High School in New Hampshire, where she graduated in 1944. Following graduation she attended Shaw’s Business College in Portland.

She was a former parishioner of St. Lawrence Congregational Church on Munjoy Hill in Portland.

Mrs. Clark worked at Maine Medical Center as a pharmacy aide for 13 years and retired in 1988 to help care for her family.

She enjoyed playing the piano.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred E. Clark Jr., in 1997 and her brother, Frederick Stephen Olson, in 2005.

Survivors include three sons, Fred E. Clark III of New Britain, Conn., Richard A. Clark and his wife, Maureen, of Kingston, Mass., and Christopher Clark and his wife, Deborah, of Saco; one brother, Oscar “Ozzie” Marshall Olson of Pittsfield, Mass.; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Joseph V. Wahrer

 

Joseph V. Wahrer, 81, of Old Orchard Beach, died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2011, after a brief illness.

He was born Oct. 12, 1929, and raised in Dayton, Ohio, one of six children of Mr. and Mrs. Vincent Wahrer.

He attended parochial schools and was a 1947 graduate of Chaminade-Julienne High School. He began working part time at age 12 to help his family and started working full time by age 17.

In 1951, he married Nan Millard and they settled in Kettering, Ohio, where they lived for many years. They both were longtime employees of Dayton Power and Light in Dayton, Ohio. Mr. Wahrer retired from the company in 2002 after a 55-year career as an accountant.

He played competitive sports including softball, golf and bowling for many years. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps for two years during the Korean War as a paymaster while stationed in Cherry Point, N.C. During that time, he briefly played baseball with the great Willie Mays.

His favorite sport was baseball and he enjoyed coaching his son, Marty, on various baseball teams for many years. During the 1970s, he also was a chaperone for youth groups that performed community service during the summer for underprivileged families in the Midwest through the Appalachian Service Project. Mr. Wahrer was an avid golfer and bowler, but his greatest joys were his four grandchildren.

After his wife died in 2004 he moved to Maine to be near his son’s family. He was a staple at all his grandchildren’s sporting events and enjoyed being a part of their accomplishments.

He was preceded in death by Nan, his wife of 52 years; his brother, Robert; and a sister, Mary.

Survivors include his son, Marty, and his wife, Vickie, of Scarborough; four grandchildren; his brothers, James of Florida and Bernard of Dayton, Ohio; and his sister, Rita, of Dayton, Ohio.

Arrangements were by Cote Funeral Home, Saco.

 

Hugh X. Cullinan

 

Hugh X. Cullinan, 93, of Saco, died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2011, at Maine Veterans’ Home in Scarborough following a brief illness.

He was born Nov. 21, 1917, in Portland, to William and Mary (Connolley) Cullinan. He graduated from Cambridge (Mass.) High School.

In 1943 Mr. Cullinan enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He was a navigator for the air offensive in the American and European theaters and flew over Europe and Normandy. He was wounded in France and was honored with the Distinguished Flying Cross Air Medal and the Purple Heart. He was honorably discharged as a captain in 1946.

On April 19, 1951, he married Jeannette A. LaRochelle at the former St. Andre Church in Biddeford. They relocated to Old Orchard Beach for 50 years to raise their family and recently moved to Saco.

Mr. Cullinan worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Portland for more than 30 years and retired in 1982. Before World War II he enjoyed working with his hands and traveled as a mason.

He was a parishioner of Most Holy Trinity Church, Good Shepherd Parish, in Saco. He was a life member of the Biddeford-Saco Elks Lodge, a member of Biddeford-Saco Country Club and former member and coach of Old Orchard Beach Little League.

Mr. Cullinan was an avid golfer and until recently frequently played at Biddeford-Saco Country Club. He also loved spending time with his children and grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Paul, Frank and Bill Cullinan; and his sister, Marion (Cullinan) Scully.

Survivors include his wife of almost 60 years, Jeannette A. Cullinan of Saco; two sons, Daniel E. Cullinan and his wife, Kim, of Kansas City, Kan., and James A. Cullinan of Seattle, Wash.; two daughters, Barbara J. Cullinan of Augusta and Elaine M. Kjos and her husband, David, of Palo Alto, Calif.; four grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Normand R. Boucher

 

Normand R. Boucher, 83, of Biddeford died Saturday, Feb. 19, 2011, at his home, surrounded by his family.

Mr. Boucher was born March 31, 1927, in Biddeford to Ephrem and Albertine (Lemire) Boucher. He was a 1945 St. Louis High School graduate and attended the University of Maine.

He served in the Navy and was stationed in Japan during World War II.

On Nov. 11, 1947, he married Cecile Guay at St. Joseph Church.

He trained as a meat cutter and worked in the field several times during his career. He was employed by Pepperell Manufacturing and Maremont Corp. He worked 16 years at Biddeford Public Works until he retired  in 1989 and later worked part time at Woodlawn Cemetery.He also owned and operated White Caps Restaurant in Biddeford Pool.

Mr. Boucher was a founder and first president of Biddeford Youth Football Association. He enjoyed maintaining a  garden at his home. He also loved his family and activities together.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Cecile Boucher; four daughters, Helen McCann and her husband, Jim, of Kennebunkport, Paulette Boucher of Orlando, Fla., Diane Charland of Biddeford and Suzanne Angers and her husband, Marc, of Saco; one son, Roland Boucher and his wife, Claire, of Biddeford; his brother, Edmund Boucher, of Smithfield; two sisters, Isabelle Johnson of Portland and Muriel Martel of Biddeford; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
