Suit filed in Saco crosswalk fatality

The daughter of a Saco woman killed while crossing Route 1 last year has filed a civil lawsuit against the man charged in the incident.
Cara St. Louis-Farrelly on March 24 filed a civil lawsuit against Walter Fleury of Old Orchard Beach and his insurance company, Liberty Mutual Group Inc. Fleury has pleaded not guilty to manslaughter for hitting and killing Constance Orendorf as she walked to church on July 11, 2010.
Fleury failed a field sobriety test and was initially charged with operating under the influence. Orendorf died at Maine Medical Center surrounded by family, according to court documents.
The civil complaint, filed in York County Superior Court in Alfred, says Fleury caused Orendorf’s wrongful death. St. Louis-Farrelly, Orendorf’s only daughter, said in the complaint she has suffered the loss of her mother’s “comfort, society and companionship as well as severe emotional distress.”
St. Louis-Farrelly made claims against Fleury’s insurance policy for personal injury and wrongful death. The personal injury claim was settled, but the wrongful death claim was denied, according to court documents.
A hearing has not been scheduled.
St. Louis-Farrelly last year said her mother moved to Saco from New Mexico to be closer to her grandchildren.
After earning a degree in piano and bassoon from Western State College in Colorado, Orendorf supported her two children by teaching music and later working as a technical writer. She also taught music in Guam and to Pueblo children in New Mexico while working for the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
In Saco, Orenforf attended all Thornton Academy performances and sang with the Voices in Harmony choir. She also attended Trinity Episcopal Church.
