Roland R. Beland

 

Roland R. Beland, 94, of Saco, died Sunday, May 15, 2011, at Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford.

He was born Nov. 16, 1916, in Sanford to Jules and Elise Perusse Beland. He was educated in Sanford schools.

Mr. Beland served in the U.S. Navy. He was employed by Gendron Lumber in Sanford and Portsmouth, N.H., for many years. He also worked at Deering Lumber in Saco as an outside salesman for 12 years and retired in 1979. During retirement he was employed by Ace Hardware in Saco.

Mr. Beland was a member of the VFW and American Legion in Sanford. He was an avid sports fan who followed the Seadogs and former Maine Guides.

He was very proud of his grandchildren and loved to spend time with them.

Mr. Beland was a parishioner of Most Holy Trinity Church, Good Shepherd Parish, in Saco.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Angeline Tardif Beland; one son, Robert Beland and his wife, Susan, of Saco and three grandchildren.

Arrangements were by Cote Funeral Home, Saco.

 

Gerard Rossignol

 

Gerard Rossignol, 89, of Biddeford died Friday, May 13, 2011, at Maine Medical Center in Portland after suffering a heart attack.

He was born May 26, 1921, in Van Buren to Emery and Eugenie Dube Rossignol and was educated in Van Buren schools.

He moved to this area in 1941. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was awarded a Purple Heart for wounds received in the Battle of the Bulge and the French Legion of Honor Medal.

On May 17, 1945, he married Gertrude Dupuis in St. Anne Church in Berlin, N.H.

Mr. Rossignol worked a few years at the Saco-Lowell Shop and 27 years at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. He retired in 1983. In retirement he worked at Waterbury Co. and Walmart, both in Biddeford, and as a handyman for owners of rental properties.

He was a member of the Luke E. Hart Council 260 of the Biddeford Knights of Columbus. He was a member of St. Joseph Church, where he served as a Eucharistic minister.

 He volunteered at the local food pantry and enjoyed traveling, working in his flower garden and doing odd jobs.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Gerard Rossignol Jr. in 1947 and Steven Rossignol in 1980.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years of Biddeford; three daughters, Elaine R. Cooper and her husband, Ryan, of  Yarmouth Port, Mass., Paulette G. Murphy and her partner, Joseph Capriotti, of Fairfield and Jeannine M. Reardon of Portland; one sister, Theoline Lachance and her husband, Adrien, of Lavonia, Mich.; eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Arrangements were by Hope Memorial Chapel, Biddeford.

 

Alice D. Berthiaume-Croteau

 

Alice D. Berthiaume-Croteau, 90, of Biddeford, died Friday, May 13, 2011, at Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford after a long illness with lung disease.

She was born Jan. 10, 1921, in Biddeford to Agenard and Julia Charron Bourgault and was educated in local schools.

On June 6, 1938, she married Wilfrid Berthiaume at St. Andre Church in Biddeford. He died Nov. 16, 1970. On Jan. 24, 1987, she married Emilien Croteau at St. Joseph Church. He died Oct. 1, 1988.

Mrs. Croteau worked a few years at Pepperell Manufacturing Co. in Biddeford, 10 years in local shoe shops and 20 years in area restaurants. She retired in 1977.

She enjoyed cooking, knitting and dining out with family and friends.

Survivors include her two sons, Raymond W. Berthiaume and his wife, Judy, of Biddeford and Donald R. Berthiaume and his wife, Jeanne, of Kennebunkport; one daughter, Doris Baker of Biddeford; one stepson, Raymond Croteau of Biddeford; one stepdaughter, Rachel Rousselle and her husband, Robert, of Biddeford; one brother, Joseph E. Bourgeault and his wife, Blanche, of Saco; one sister, Anita LeProhon of Biddeford; nine grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, four great-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Arrangements were by Hope Memorial Chapel, Biddeford.

 

Rosa Bouthillette

 

Rosa Bouthillette, 95, of Biddeford, died Thursday, May 12, 2011, at Southridge Living Center in Biddeford.

She was born Aug. 4, 1915, in Canada to Alfred and Marie-Jeanne Bourassa Bisson. She was educated in Canadian schools.

She moved with her family to the United States in 1929 and married her husband, Raoul, on May 21, 1938, at St. Andre Church in Biddeford

Mrs. Bouthillette was employed by Bates Manufacturing in Biddeford for many years. She also worked at John Roberts and Elm Laundry for several years.

She was a life member and past vice president of Luke E. Hart Council of Knights of Columbus Auxiliary and a past member of Daughters of Isabella.

She was a parishioner of St. Joseph Church, Good Shepherd Parish, Biddeford.

She enjoyed knitting and playing cribbage. Most of all, she loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Bouthillette was preceded in death by her husband on Oct. 8, 2004; one granddaughter, Nancy Turgeon; three brothers Roland, Paul and Urbain; four sisters, Estella Marcoux, Gertrude Labelle, Annette Gendron and Loretta Ledoux; and her son-in-law, Pat Marcoux.

Survivors include one son, Normand J. Bouthillette and his wife, Joan, of Biddeford; one daughter, Ann H. Marcoux of Biddeford; one brother, Conrad Bisson of Florida; four grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, one great-great grandson and several nieces and nephews.

Arrangements were by Hope Memorial Chapel, Biddeford.

Joseph A. Garland

 

Joseph A. Garland, 82, of Old Orchard Beach, died Monday, May 9, 2011, at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough.

He was born Aug. 18, 1928, in Sanford, to Albert and Florine Garland and moved to Old Orchard Beach as a child. He was educated there and also attended Portland Junior College.

Mr. Garland served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.  On April 26, 1952, he married Lucille Demeule at St. Joseph Church in Biddeford.

He owned and operated Garland’s Oil Service for 43 years from 1954 to 1997 and Garland’s Cottages in Old Orchard Beach from 1963 to 2002.

Mr. Garland was a member of St. Margaret Church. He was a life member of Biddeford & Saco Elks Lodge 1597, American Legion and VFW Post 7997 in Old Orchard Beach. He enjoyed boating in Saco Bay and vacationing in Florida.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Eyvonne Tarazewich, in 2007.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Lucille Garland of Old Orchard Beach; one son, Steven Garland and his wife, Evelyn, of Cape Elizabeth; two daughters, Sharon Karalekas and her husband, Charles, of South Elgin, Ill., and Linda Bailer and her husband, Paul, of Scarborough; six grandchildren and two cousins.

Arrangements were by Hope Memorial Chapel, Biddeford.
