William A. Doran Jr.

 

William A. Doran Jr., 75, of Biddeford, died Sunday, July 31, 2011, at St. Andre Health Care following a long illness.

He was born Aug. 11, 1935, in Biddeford to William A. and Bernadette (Bourassa) Doran Sr. He was a St. Francis High School graduate and 1958 graduate of the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy.

On June 28, 1958, he married Rita Manning at St. Mary Church in Biddeford. She died May 15, 2009, after nearly 51 years of marriage.

Mr. Doran was co-owner and operator of Doran’s Pharmacy at the corner of Main and Elm streets in Biddeford with his brother John until 1976. He then worked at Hannaford Bros. pharmacy, formerly Wellby’s, until his retirement in 2005.

He was a former parishioner of St. Mary Church and later attended weekly Mass at St. Andre Health Care. He also was a former member of the Knights of Columbus.

He enjoyed watching televised sports and trips to Foxwoods casino. Before his wife became ill, they loved traveling. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, especially their many outings at the family camp on Little Ossippee Lake. His six grandsons had a special place in his heart.

Survivors include three sons, James M. Doran and his wife, Theresa, of Saco, Patrick M. Doran of Biddeford and William A. Doran III and his wife, Melanie, of Dayton; one daughter, Kathleen M. Collette and her husband, Gary, of Dayton; one brother, John V. Doran and his wife, Judy, of Biddeford; one sister, Nancy Croteau and her husband, Roger, of Long Meadow, Mass.; six grandsons and several nieces and nephews.

Arrangements were by Hope Memorial Chapel, Biddeford.

 

Norman R. Gagnon

 

Norman R. Gagnon, 60, of Biddeford, died Thursday, July 28, 2011, at his residence.

He was born Oct. 27, 1950, to Leo and Madeleine Dube Gagnon. He was educated at Thornton Academy.

Mr. Gagnon moved to Biddeford in 1977.

He was a member of the National Guard from 1970 to 1979. He was employed by Biddeford Textile for 24 years and by Shaw’s Distribution Center in Wells for the past 12 years.

He enjoyed taking photos for the Maine Lions and Maine Sabers, both semi-pro football teams.

He was a member of St. Jean Baptiste and the American Legion. His hobbies included hunting and fishing and following all sports. He enjoyed traveling, especially to Caribbean islands, Aruba and Las Vegas. Most of all, he loved to spend time with his family and pets.

He was preceded in death by his father, Leo Gagnon, in 2008.

He is survived by his mother, Madeleine Dube Gagnon of Biddeford; his wife of 21 years, Sharolyn Lowell Gagnon of Biddeford; one son, Ricky Gagnon and his wife, Melissa, of Saco; one daughter, Shelley Roberge, and her husband, David, of Lyman; one stepson, Timothy Westleigh and his wife, Debra, of Lyman; one sister, Susan Loring of Biddeford; nine grandchildren and one niece.

Roland Grenier

 

Roland Grenier, 79, of Winchendon, Mass., and formerly of Saco, died Wednesday, July 27, 2011, at his residence.

He was born Feb. 10, 1932, in Biddeford to Emile and Rosa Huot Grenier. He was educated in Biddeford schools.

Mr. Grenier was employed by Pepperell Manufacturing and Biddeford Textile for 40 years and retired in 1987. He was known as “Brains” by his co-workers and served on the executive board for 34 years.

He enjoyed working around his home, but most loved time with his family.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Majorie Stella McAlevey Grenier, on Jan. 24, 2001; four sisters, Blanche Lajoe, Beatrice Nava, Rose Hadiaz and Violet Perreault; and by five brothers, Rene, Conrad, Emile, Leo and Andrew Grenier.

Survivors include three sons, Randell Grenier and his wife, Elaine, of Colonial Heights, Va., Timothy John Grenier of Biddeford and Scott Anthony Grenier of Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.; three daughters, Deborah Gean Connelly and her husband, Robert, of Winchendon, Mass., Shirley Brooks and her husband, Gordon, of Saco and Barbara Camire and her husband, Brian, of Saco; 15 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Arrangements were by Cote Funeral Home, Saco.

 

Leo G. Vadnais

 

Leo Gerard Vadnais, 73, of Biddeford died peacefully on July 27, 2011, at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough, surrounded by his family.

He was born on May 18, 1938, in Biddeford to Alcide and Rose (Chantigny) Vadnais. He attended local schools and graduated from St. Louis High School.

Mr. Vadnais enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1959 and served in the Advanced Infantry – Demon’s Division. He was trained in winter and mountain patrol operations and served in Korea in 1960 with special reaction forces in the demilitarized zone. After leaving the Army, Mr. Vadnais went back to school and received a degree in police officer law enforcement.

In May 1967 he married Claudette Collard at St. André Church in Biddeford

He co-owned Vadnais Oil with his brother Paul for more than 40 years.

He was a parishioner of St. Joseph Church and member of the Dutch Elm Country Club and St. Louis Alumni Association.

Mr. Vadnais loved sports, including Biddeford Tiger football, golf, tennis and Red Sox. He also loved spending time with his family and friends and playing with his grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister Mona Tate in 1986.

Survivors include Claudette Vadnais, his wife of 44 years; his son, David Vadnais, and his wife, Lisa, of Biddeford; his daughter, Julann Cadorette and her husband, John, of Biddeford; two brothers, Paul Vadnais and his wife, Constance, of Biddeford and Ralph Vadnais and his wife, Doris, of Saco; three sisters, Bernice Vadnais of Old Orchard Beach, Carol Dutil and her husband, Roger, of Biddeford and Claire Tillyer and her husband, John, of Saco; five grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Arrangements were by Hope Memorial Chapel, Biddeford.

 

Eleanor G. Mogan

 

Eleanor G. Mogan, 89, of Biddeford died July 26, 2011, at Seal Rock Healthcare.

She was born Aug. 21, 1921, in Biddeford to Michael J. and Alice (Twomey) Mogan. She was a 1939 Biddeford High School graduate.

She was a former communicant of St. Mary Church.

Miss Mogan worked as a bookkeeper at the A & P grocery store for more than 40 years.

Survivors include her sister, Charlotte Paradis and her husband, Raoul, of Biddeford; two nephews, a grand-niece and three grand-nephews.

Arrangements were by Hope Memorial Chapel, Biddeford.

 

Jo-Ann A. Droggitis

 

Jo-Ann A. Droggitis, 58, of Biddeford, died Monday, July 25, 2011, at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House after a long illness with ovarian cancer.

She was born Sept. 30, 1952, in Biddeford to Harold J. and Anita (Boucher) Underwood. She was a 1970 Biddeford High School graduate.

On Nov. 3, 1973, she married Spencer Droggitis in an ecumenical service at St. Demetrios Church in Biddeford.

Mrs. Droggitis worked 38 years at Webber Hospital and Southern Maine Medical Center and retired in April 2010 due to ill health.

She was a member of the Parish of the Good Shepherd and looked forward to attending retreats at the Marie-Joseph Spiritual Center. She enjoyed making jewelry and beading, sewing, playing racquetball, going to the beach and time with friends and family.

Survivors include her husband of 37 years, Spencer Droggitis of Biddeford; one daughter, Kristin Goodness and her husband, Casey, of Saco; her mother, Anita Underwood Berard of Biddeford; her brother, Joseph Underwood and his wife, Julie, of Bangor; her sister, Diane Jordan of Baton Rouge, La.; and two grandsons.

Arrangements were by Hope Memorial Chapel, Biddeford.

 

Barbara H. Bond

 

Barbara H. (Gabby) Bond, 92, formerly of Saco, died Sunday, July 24, 2011, at her home in Norman, Okla.

She was born April 14, 1919, in Arlington, Mass., to Blanche Edna King and Donald Russell Hill.

She had a passion for music and as a young woman attended the Arlington Conservatory of Music.

She married Harold Arthur Bond Jr. in 1941. He died during World War II when his plane was shot down over Italy on Feb. 14, 1944. They had one daughter.

She later married Charles Cameron Bond, had three more children and lived in Winchester, Mass. In 1964, she moved with her children to Saco and became librarian of Dyer Library and director of York Institute Museum.

She retired in 1973 and turned to her passion for painting and writing poetry. She edited the Maine Poetry Association newsletter for years and was awarded a plaque proclaiming her a “living legacy” from the city of Saco for her contributions to art and literature during her 44 years as a resident there.  Her home was always open to anyone in need of a place to stay, a meal or rousing conversation around her kitchen table.

Her best friend and sister, Martha Hill McClellan, died several years ago.

Survivors include her children, Martha (Bonnie Bond) and Hap Pritchard of Portland, Ore., Charles Cameron Bond Jr. of North Bend, Wash., Constance King Bond of Westbrook; J. Taylor (Bond) and Joseph Suflita of Norman, Okla.; 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Arrangements were by Primrose Funeral Service, Norman, Okla.

 

Rachel C. Reggep

 

Rachel C. Reggep, 82, of Saco, died Sunday, July 24, 2011, in California.

She was born on July 17, 1929, in Biddeford a daughter of George and Marie Rose (Benoit) Shevenell.

She was employed at Pepperell Mills for several years and also worked at Good Shepherd Villa for four years. She later went back to school and earned her Certified Nursing Assistant certificate in 1982 and worked for South Ridge Living Center in Biddeford.

Mrs. Reggep was a member of TOPS in Saco and earned the level of queen. She also was a member of the Saco Senior Citizens.

She enjoyed music and dancing and traveled several times with her husband, George, to Arizona. She was an avid reader and swimmer and also volunteered at Books Revisited in Biddeford. She especially loved time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 2006 and her sister, Jeanne Rand.

Survivors include three daughters, Karen Benjamin and her husband, Chris, of Arizona, Erica King and her husband, James, of California, with whom she resided, and Monica Gervais and her husband, William; two sons, Paul Reggep of Florida and Peter Reggep of Saco; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Arrangements were by Cote Funeral Home, Saco.

 

Claudette M. Benoit

 

Claudette M. Benoit, 61, of Roanoke, Va., and formerly of Biddeford, died Sunday, April 10, 2011.

She was born June 25, 1949, to Eugene and Aline Breton.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Donald Breton.

She is survived by her daughter Tammy Kinney and husband, Scott, of Vinton, Va.; two grandsons; her parents, Eugene and Aline Breton of Kennebunk; three brothers, Eugene Breton of Tennessee, Rene Breton of Sanford and Richard Breton of Saco; her sisters, Simone Drouin of Biddeford, Patricia Conley of Saco, and Susan Doughty of Saco.
