Morin Street business to close at end of year

A Biddeford company that specializes in deck materials will be closed by its parent company by the end of the year.
Alyssa Hall, spokesman for Wayne, N.J.,-based roofing manufacturer GAF, said it will closed its Duralife Decking facilities at 15 Morin St. and in Lenexa, Kan., by the end of the fourth quarter.
Hall said sales of decking and railing products decreased because of a weak economy and drop in home improvement projects.
“We stand behind the product and will honor all warranties,” she said.
Hall said the company will continue to sell the decking and railing material until supplies run out.
The Biddeford facility was known as Correct Building Products and was established about 12 years ago. Hall said it was bought by GAF in August 2009. She said about 40 employees will lose their jobs.

Fire in Biddeford displaces family

A Biddeford family was left homeless Monday after a midday fire damaged their apartment on Alfred Street.
Biddeford Fire Department Deputy Chief Paul R. LaBrecque said the cause of the fire at 48 Alfred St. remained undetermined as of Tuesday. Occupants of five other apartments in the building were allowed to return home Monday afternoon.
The fire was reported at 11:17 a.m. Monday in a building that also houses Twin City Café and is almost directly across the street from the Biddeford Police Department.
LaBrecque said no one was injured in the fire that took about 45 minutes to control. Biddeford firefighters were assisted by Saco firefighters and gained access to the scene through a parking lot on Franklin Street.
The fire was contained between floors at the rear of the building, LaBrecque said.
