A former Saco mayor and a former city councilor will square off Nov. 8 to become the new mayor of the city.
Former Mayor Mark D. Johnston and former councilor Jeffrey A. Christenbury returned nomination papers by Monday’s deadline, said Saco City Clerk Michele Hughes.
Current Mayor Roland Michaud is seeking a seat on Regional School Unit 23 Board of Education.
Races for mayor, school board and the Ward 7 City Council seat are the only contested elections on the ballot. Two of seven warden seats and five of seven ward clerk seats drew no candidates.
Johnston is a six-term mayor who last held office in 2007. Christenbury resigned his council seat after moving out of Ward 4 in April. His replacement, Councilor Phillip L. Blood, is running unopposed for a full two-year term in the Ward comprised of Camp Ellis and Ferry Beach.
The November elections, held at Saco Community Center at 75 Franklin St., will be a family affair as Johnston’s son Nathan D. Johnston seeks to defeat incumbent Marston D. Lovell. Lovell is the uncle of Courier Editor Molly Lovell.
Also on the Ward 7 ballot is Sherri L. Hancock, running unopposed for warden.
The council races feature incumbents seeking re-election with the exception of Ward 1, where Margaret Mills did not take out nomination papers.
Mills said after serving two terms she is ready to let someone else seek office, and added she was happy to learn former Councilor David Tripp is running. Tripp has no opponents for the seat.
Filling out the ballot in Ward 1 are Terry L. Von Salza Brown and Arthur P. Prentiss, who seeks warden and ward clerk positions, respectively.
In Ward 2, incumbent Councilor Leslie Smith Jr. is running unopposed. George Chase is running for warden and Gloria J. Marquis for ward clerk.
Marie D. Doucette is seeking re-election as councilor from Ward 3. No one returned nomination papers for warden or ward clerk.
In Ward 4, Marianne C. Cook seeks the warden position and no one filed papers for the ward clerk position.
Councilor Arthur J. Tardif is running unopposed in Ward 5 and is the only person seeking office in the ward.
In Ward 6, Eric B. Cote seeks a new two-year term. No nomination papers were filed for the warden or ward clerk positions.
Michaud is one of four candidates who filed papers for two three-year terms on the RSU 23 board. The district includes Saco, Dayton and Old Orchard Beach. Incumbent Elizabeth C. Johnston, former Saco School Board member Shirley J. Jones and Alan L. Smith round out the ballot.
