William S. Adams

William S. Adams Sr., 89, of Houlton, left to be with his Lord and savior Sept. 15, 2011, with his family by his side after a long illness.
He was born Aug. 10, 1922, at New Limerick, the son of Violet L. (Sanford) and Ora L. Adams Sr.
William served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and participated in the invasion of Marshall Island, Tinia, Japan and Guam of the Mariana Island, Pelelieu of Palova Islands, Leyte and Luzon of Phillipines Islands, Okinawa and Cape Gloucester, several reinforcements in New Guinea, New Caledonia and first ones arriving into harbor and unloading troops as occupational troops at Nagasaki, Japan after the second atomic bomb was dropped.
His unit was awarded a Presidential Citation. He returned to the states in November 1945 and was honorably discharged Jan. 6, 1946, as Pharmacist First Class and a dental hygienist aboard the USS Wayne, APA 54.
William was a member of the American Legion Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 47. He was a member of First Baptist Church. William was very active in area sports and served on the first Houlton Little League board and as coach and instructor for Little and Babe Ruth Leagues.
He was a railroad locomotive engineer for the Bangor & Aroostook Railroad for 32 years, retiring in 1984. He served for fours years on the United Transportation Union as a secretary of the committee of adjustment. William was a Master Mason of the Monument Lodge, No. 96, A.F. & A.M., the Aroostook Chapter No. 70, Royal Arch Masons, St. Alderman Commandery No. 17, K.T., Houlton, the Anah Temple Shrine, A.A.O.N.M.S. of Bangor, the Sunshine Club for Crippled Children of Bangor and the Aroostook County Shrine Club of Presque Isle. He enjoyed spending time with his family.
He was an avid gardener for over 65 years. His other passion were his ponies, Dot, Dan and Dolly.
William is survived by his wife of 64 years, Lois (Guy) Adams of Houlton. He is the father of Deborah A. Brewer, a former Saco-Biddeford business owner for more than 30 years, 12 grandchildren; and one sister, Eldee Gordan of King, North Carolina.
He was predeceased by his daughter, Nancy Toner, in 1991, and his son, Larry, in 2001; three sisters, Avis Adams, Hazel Plummer, Ada Hovey, and two brothers, Carl Adams and Ora Adams Jr.
William is the grandfather of Michelle Brewer and Christopher Brewer of Saco and Amanda Brewer Tripp of Hollis. He is the great-grandfather of Ashley and Alyssa Brewer, Michelle Castaldo and Margaret and William Tripp.
